The Air Force Thunderbirds are a picture of consistency. They have mastered the art of excellence despite circumstances. Regardless of the circumstances, they are consistent with responding with a solution and not reacting to the circumstances. Practice makes perfect! Learn to respond to a solution, leadership is revealed.
" If you want to be taken seriously, BE CONSISTENT! "
We start our day with the best of intentions, only to be derailed by the first distraction. We start our week with the great anticipation, only to be refocused by a rough Monday. We start our month with refreshed goals, only to be changed with unforeseen circumstances. We start our year with new resolutions, only to be changed with the first discouragement.
As many of us are shaking our heads yes, we understand the reality, but are frustrated with the consistency of the routine. We want to stop the routine, but often fail to understand how to break the routine. This is the dilemma we face each moment. Instead of reacting to the circumstances each day, we need to focus on our response to the solution. When we react to the circumstance, we will create an atmosphere of confusion and stress. When we respond to the solution, our response will focus us and those around us on creating consistency.
1. Have Realistic Expectations. We need to realize we are not perfect. We will make mistakes. When we fail one time, it does not mean we will fail every time. We are not perfect, don't pretend to be. Instead of focusing on why we were unsuccessful, focus on what we will do to be successful the next time.
2. Be Disciplined. We don't always want to do what we should do when we should do it. A higher the level of discipline creates clarity when we encounter circumstances. Clarity allows us to respond quicker and think about the best course of action.
3. Match your words with your actions. Saying what you mean and mean what you say is the key to being consistent. To be taken seriously, when chaos is present, people need know you are a person of your word. We need to be responsible for what we say and our actions need to reflect our words.
4. Eliminate Negative Thoughts. Our thoughts or self-talk form our beliefs and feelings. Our beliefs will result in our activity. The outcome of our activity will be successful based on our thinking. When we are in a habit of thinking positive, our response will be a portrait what we are thinking.
5. Avoid Excuses. Instead of resorting to an excuse, respond with a solution. When we take responsibility for change, we will eliminate the temptation to blame someone or something else. Focus on how to move forward and not the reason we are stagnant will create momentum for future situations.
To be taken seriously, consistency is the key. How we respond to the circumstances around us establishes the credibility we need for people to listen. Being consistent in every moment, reveals the leader you are. In each day, week, month, or year is an opportunity to respond to every circumstance as a growth opportunity versus a setback. Leadership influences everyone around us to learn from our consistency and become a leader because of our example.
Does our consistent example promote confidence or instill fear?
