Why Women Should Lead the World!

The Future of Leadership Belongs to Women.

It’s Time to Rethink Leadership

For generations, leadership in nearly all areas—government, business, and society—has been dominated by men. Power has often been synonymous with competition and control.

But where has this taken us?

We now face environmental crises, massive inequality, and ongoing conflict. The current systems of leadership seem to be crumbling, and it's worth considering:?

What if women had been leading all along?

Could the world have been in a better place?

Is it time to let women take the reins?

The contributions of men have brought us to where we are, but we cannot know what women could achieve unless they are given the opportunity to lead.

This isn’t about pitting genders against each other—it’s about recognizing that women may offer the kind of leadership the world needs most right now.

Here's why:

1. Women Lead Through Relationships, Not Rivalry

For centuries, leadership has been associated with dominance, competition, and often, a “winner-takes-all” mindset. However, many women lead by fostering relationships, encouraging collaboration, and nurturing communities.

The Evidence is Compelling:

  • Studies show that women often excel in leadership traits like developing others, inspiring teams, and building strong relationships. These are the very traits that foster long-term growth and success.
  • For Example; Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s leader, showcased empathy and connection during the global pandemic. Her approach, centered around transparency and protecting lives, led to one of the most effective responses worldwide.

Takeaway: Strength has often been confused with force. What if true strength lies in compassion and bridge-building? ?Women Lead from a Point of Connection, and Not Conquest. The kind of leadership women are known for might be exactly what we need right now.

2. Women Prefer Cooperation Over Competition

The current world order thrives on competition—between nations, corporations, and even individuals. While competition can foster innovation, it also leads to division. Women, in contrast, often prioritize teamwork and collective success over individual victories.

Examples:

  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first female president, guided Liberia through a post-war recovery by focusing on national reconciliation. Her leadership style was centered on bringing people together, especially empowering women to rebuild the country.

Empathy is pushed as a “MUST HAVE” leadership trait in the 21st century. However, many male leaders struggle to demonstrate empathy while aiming for high productivity and profit effectively.

Women on the other hand show empathy naturally which in turn helps them to have more compassion than their male counterparts.

For Example;?

  • Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, transformed the struggling company by promoting collaboration across all levels. Her inclusive approach turned GM into a stronger, more resilient organization.

These examples clearly demonstrate that what women bring to leadership works on every level.

Supporting Data:

  • Research shows that companies with women in leadership roles perform better financially and are more likely to surpass their competition.

Reflection: Could the cutthroat competition driving inequality and conflict be softened by leadership that values cooperation? Women’s natural inclination towards collaboration might just be the key to tackling global challenges.

3. Women Lead with the Future in Mind

One clear difference in leadership approaches is that women often prioritize long-term outcomes. While some male leaders focus on immediate success—whether quarterly profits or winning elections—women are more likely to think about lasting impact, sustainability, and legacy.

Examples:

  • Christine Lagarde, head of the European Central Bank, champions green financing and policies that balance economic growth with sustainability, in contrast to short-term profit-driven strategies.

Women care a lot about the future so they place great importance on protecting the environment. This makes them more suited to spearhead environmentally friendly projects.

For Example;?

  • Gro Harlem Brundtland, Norway’s former prime minister, was a pioneer in advocating for sustainable development. Her leadership placed environmental protection and social equity alongside economic growth.

Evidence:

  • Companies with more women in senior roles tend to adopt more sustainable practices, from environmental policies to community engagement.

Insight: As we face mounting crises, from climate change to economic instability, short-term thinking is becoming a liability. Women’s focus on long-term impact could be the solution the world needs for sustainable progress.

4. Women Foster Peace, Not Conflict

Throughout history, most conflicts have been led by men. The belief that power is gained through force has fueled countless wars. Women, however, are often seen as natural peacemakers, striving for negotiation and conflict resolution over aggression.

Facts:

  • Peace agreements involving women are significantly more likely to last over a decade, according to research. Their focus on inclusivity and justice plays a pivotal role in sustainable peace efforts.
  • Women have also been shown to favor non-violent approaches to conflict resolution in areas such as crime, incarceration, and war.

Examples:

  • The Liberian Women’s Peace Movement, led by Leymah Gbowee, played a major role in ending the country’s civil war by uniting women from different backgrounds to demand peace.
  • Similarly, Angela Merkel's leadership during the European refugee crisis showcased the power of compassion and empathy.?

Both examples highlight how female leaders, whether on a grassroots or global level, often focus on unity, humanity, and peace as central pillars of their leadership.

Reflection: The world’s obsession with power and force has led to conflict and destruction. Women’s natural ability to mediate and prioritize peaceful solutions might be what’s needed to shift away from a cycle of violence and towards global stability.

5. Women Lead with a Focus on People

Perhaps the most compelling reason why women should lead is that they tend to prioritize human well-being over power or profit. Women leaders often emphasize social good, community progress, and collective well-being rather than personal or financial gain.

In an era that demands more empathetic and values-driven leadership, women are naturally poised to lead the charge.

Examples:

  • Melinda Gates, through her philanthropic work, has focused on empowering women and girls, knowing that gender equality is key to solving larger global issues such as poverty and healthcare disparities.

Similarly, Ruth Bader Ginsburg dedicated her life to advancing gender equality through the legal system

  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the iconic U.S. Supreme Court Justice, spent her life advocating for equal rights, particularly gender equality. Her leadership was marked by her unwavering focus on justice and fairness.

The Big Picture: The world’s challenges might stem from a leadership model that prioritizes power over people. By humanizing leadership, women offer an alternative path—one that puts the well-being of individuals and communities at the forefront.
