“Naike look you need to make yourself visible and speak” That's what my mentor said when I recently spoke to him about needing a sponsor to advance my career. I usually see you hiding behind a corner when you host the wonderful training, gala award dinners, etc.
I was not surprised by his statement and I completely agreed with everything that he said. The biggest question is why is it that we don’t like to speak up in meetings or shy ourselves from opportunities to be seen? Is it fear that is holding us back? Is it the African environment where we are raised that shuts us off? We have to realize that speaking up is a constant battle that women have to face at work and in public spaces. You have to remember that women who make history, who achieve greatness, were never silent. Once you start making a consistent effort to speak up in meetings, gatherings, you’ll find that commanding attention will come naturally.
