The why, when and how behind pruning
Pruning your plants is an essential part of your yard and gardening maintenance.
Pruning helps your plans remain healthy and stop the spreading of disease and insects as well as make room for air circulation and sunlight penetration. It can also bring back life to the trees and shrubs as you are removing the dead weight.
Another considerations is safety as dead branches can become hazardous when they fall off on their own. Especially as we are going into the winter season and weather damage can create a greater risk.
You want to prune your plants in late winter or early spring as they are dormant. If your plant flowers in the summer, winter is the ideal time. If the plant flowers in the spring, summer is a better time to prune.
When pruning your shrubs and trees there are two considerations. Are your thinning the plant or are you reducing the height of the plant itself?
When thinning your plant it is to open up the space for circulation of air and sun penetration.
Both types of pruning, cutting the head or thinning the plant will stimulate growth in your shrubs and trees.
