Why what you do matters: A note

Why what you do matters: A note

“If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do” - Joss Whedon

This one’s a bit more of a…different deep dive.

Could you call it a reflection? I guess so.

More like, into why what you do matters.

Regardless of what kind of business you’re in, I hope this resonates with you.

Let’s just cut the fluff.

So, I run an SEM agency. You could say I’m a digital expert.

Before that, however, I worked with other large agencies.

Handled big client accounts as well.

However, when I decided to pivot, I started from 0. That was at the age of 24.

Now? Touching 7 figures.

What’s the point of all of this?

To prove that I’m qualified to talk about this.

That, whatever you’re doing, the ups and downs you’ve faced, I’ve probably faced them as well.

To tell you that I can relate.

But, most of all, to make sure you get my message that whatever you do, it matters.

Let’s cut the platitudes as well.

It’s easy for me to say “You should volunteer, you know. Helping the community is a good thing.”

Or, “You should help people and teach them in your own time. Give back to the younger generation and those that are less privileged.”

It’s more powerful to focus on the reason behind that.

The mindset, if you like.

And that is…

It’s really easy to say nothing matters. That way, you don’t have to feel accountable.

“But, hold on. Isn’t that kinda true Drew? What’s the point of all of these struggles? These efforts? I mean, what’s the point of life then?”

Everything and anything you do has a purpose. An impact. And effect.

Not just on you but the people around you.

Just like you saying ‘thank you’ to someone on something trivial can make their day…

Your attitude towards actually caring and knowing that everything matters can affect so many people on so many levels.

And the reason why? It doesn’t have to be the same for everyone.

For example, If I tell you that my purpose is that I want to reach more entrepreneurs and help them on the marketing and advertising side to become global giants…

And you want to simply make a difference in people’s lives…

Does that mean one of us is wrong?

No.

"You still haven’t cleared my confusion up Drew. What’s the point?"

Hmm. Well, it’s kind of something that has to come from within.

Sure, I can say that it’ll make you a better person…

Or it’ll help you reach your highest potential…

Or even, simply considering everything matters will help you lead a more fulfilling life…

But that’s something you need to discover.

There’s a reason.

Maybe it’s linked to someone else.

Maybe someone needs you to be there for them.

Someone that looks up to you.

Is inspired by you.

Again, it’s personal to you. Your reason for being. For moving forward.

And no, it doesn’t matter what you do or where you’re from, or what your background is.

The fact that you’re here is enough.

This is where you’d expect me to tell you how you should make a difference.

And yes, there are many ways you can do that.

You can help by simply lending a helping hand.

That could be volunteering, teaching on your own time, or simply lending an ear to someone.

You could help people financially. Donate to a charity perhaps.

You could team up with someone and vow to work towards a more healthy lifestyle.

However, that’s not the point of this.

The point is that you realize that your actions have great value and appreciation.

In the workplace.

In society.

At home.

Among friends.

Even on an individual level.

And it’s not always about others…

Sometimes, it’s just about you.

All you need to do is ‘realize’ the value and worth.

The impact that you have.

Think about it like this:

What if a firefighter stopped believing in what they did?

Or if an ER nurse in a run-down suburb started to question what they did?

“Yeah, but what they do ACTUALLY matters Drew. Can’t say the same for the rest of us.”

Says who?

What’s the point of treating people if patients keep coming in?

What’s the point of putting out seemingly never-ending fires?

“...”

Exactly my point. It’s all up to YOU to believe if what you do matters or not.

I mean, it doesn’t change if things matter or not. It simply changes your outlook and how you approach things.

And, simply caring and being there is enough.

Sure, it’s easy to say that nothing matters.

But, is that true?

Let's look at things from another perspective.

Maybe things don’t seemingly matter today. But will that be the case say…10 or 20 years from now?

Actions are like plants. They take time to bear fruit.

Just look at companies like Apple, Samsung, Ford, etc.

They all started with an idea right? What do you think the reason was to start them back then?

Where do you think we would be if someone thought “Nah, what’s the point? Nothing matters anyway. Why put in any effort?”

Today, these companies employ hundreds of thousands of people.

Those are jobs. Livelihoods. Families can grow, survive and thrive.

People innovating. People making progress.

So, it’s all from within. It all starts with you.

It’s up to you to figure out your reason for doing things.

For realizing the value and worth of what you do.

For recognizing that you do something worth doing.

Be it a job, be it parenting, be it innovation, be it a weekly support group…

Whatever you do, it matters.

Whether you realize that or not, it won’t change that fact.

What it will change is your outlook on things.

The way you tackle your daily challenges.

Your peace of mind.

Your level of satisfaction and contentment.

The way you impact the people around you.

The change you potentially bring to society.

These are things that will change.

But…

It all starts with you.

You believing in you.

You accepting you.

That’s enough.

Any downs you go through…?

It’s okay.

Any problems you face…

It’s okay,

You’ll probably pull through.

Just realize the worth of what you do.

Anyways, that’s that.

Reach out if you’d like to talk or if I can help in any way.

That’s it for today.

Be well, and see you around.
