Why we've introduced attached caps

Why we've introduced attached caps

From today – we are taking another step towards achieving a World Without Waste.

We are the first major soft drinks company to announce the switch to new attached caps across our entire range in Great Britain. The aim is to keep all parts of the bottle together, making it easier to collect and recycle helping to prevent litter. Our customers will just need to twist the cap, bend it back, and reseal it when they’re finished. ?

It’s one of many steps we’re taking towards our global commitment to help collect and recycle a bottle or can for everyone that we sell by 2025 and whilst it may seem a small change it will help us move towards a circular system.??

Our bottles are 100% recyclable and last year we reached our target of using 100% recycled plastic – excluding caps and labels – in all our 500ml or smaller bottles sold in Great Britain ahead of schedule, helping to save around 29,000 tonnes of plastic per year.

One of our challenges, however, has been that not all parts of the bottle have been easily collectable at the time of recycling. Often bottle caps are lost or discarded improperly, which not only leads to littering but contributes to a shortage of food-grade recycled plastic.

The new attached cap design will play a role in solving this by remaining attached to the bottle after opening, making it easier to recycle the whole bottle ensuring that no cap gets left behind. Increasing the number of recycled bottles makes sure that we can continue to produce high-quality recycled plastic.

We also continue our work with partners to leverage their expertise to address broader packaging and resource sustainability issues. We are proud to be a member of The UK Plastics Pact helping to raise awareness and drive real solutions in our move toward a packageless future.

It’s the combination of all of these actions and initiatives that sums up what #WorldWithoutWaste means - solutions to solve the world’s packaging problems through clever design, driving collection rates and working with partners to make a difference.

Step in the right direction but still more to be done to achieve World Without Waste ??

I have to ask. Why would you not stop the plastic entirely and use larger cans / glass bottles? Both have a significantly higher rate of recycling than any form of plastic. As one of the worlds largest plastic poluters, I believe Coca-Cola have a responsibility to do much better.
