Why website speed matters? Basic statistics

Read it in a minute...

Website speed, or website performance, refers to how quickly a browser can load fully functional web pages from a given server. Poorly performing sites that process slowly in a browser can drive users away, decrease traffic and affect conversions.

Urs Holzle (Google Engineer) presented some statistics explaining why response times are so important.

  • When Google search queries slowed to as little as 400 milliseconds, traffic decreased by 0.44%.
  • 80% of users stop watching a video if it stops during playback.
  • Edmunds.com reduced load time from 9 seconds to 1.4 seconds, page views increased 17% and ad revenue rose 3%.
  • Shopzilla reduced load times from 7 seconds to 2 seconds, with page views up 25% and revenue up 7% to 12%.

One of the biggest impacts is on end users, who expect pages to load in two seconds, and after three seconds, up to 40% of users abandon websites.
