Why website clients need to have all their passwords
It’s Monday again and as usual, I’ll be putting my thoughts out there on a specific topic. As you can tell from the title I’m going to attempt to highlight why your website clients need to have all their passwords. Let me elaborate a little as to what I mean. A client comes to me and wants a website. I create the website and the client learns how to manage the website effectively. Here’s is a list of reasons why I think clients should at least have a set of passwords for their hosting and their website back-end at the very least.
Something might happen to you
Life is what it is and, anything can happen. You as a web developer or designer can fall ill or you may also just stop doing business. I obviously don’t wish anything on anyone or their business but, life happens. Make sure your client has hosting and back-end details in case a new developer needs to take over in cases of extreme remittances.
They may want to part ways
Not all projects turn out the way we hope or wish for. Sometimes clients aren’t the best fit or you as a developer have not provided the level of service or care a client expected in their view. Our view of professionalism and quality of service may differ with a client and in turn, prompt either party to want to dissolve the cooperation. If that occurs, make sure they have all the details they need for someone new to take over the project.
They are the owner, so they are entitled to it
If a client pays you for creating a website, the reality is that they are the owner of that final product unless your contract terms specify something different. Assuming the client owns their site, they need to have any data relating to hosting and the back-end or even FTP credentials. Even if the client never uses them or simply doesn’t have the technical know-how to be able to utilize them, they are entitled to them.
