Why we write

"Let me shake your hand," the person said. It won't surprise many of you that I chat with people in stores. This weekend, when I told someone my profession, they thanked me. They said journalists are fundamental to democracy.

This week, I also celebrated the work of women journalists at the International Women's Media Foundation awards and the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism dinner for business journalists. Journalism can be a challenging job for many, and dangerous for some. It was wonderful to come together as a community and highlight great work.

Onward:?

JPMorgan Chase shares rose nearly 5% after?profit beat expectations?in the third quarter, fueled by gains in investment banking and rising interest payments.

Wells Fargo's profit?surpassed forecasts?as it set aside less money than expected to cover potential loan losses and predicted its interest income would stabilize, sending shares up 6%.

U.S. consumer finances?remain resilient, although there are signs higher inflation has stretched some Americans on lower incomes,?said two of the country's biggest lenders.

TD Bank became the largest bank in U.S. history to?plead guilty?to violating a federal law aimed at preventing money laundering. It agreed to pay over $3 billion in penalties to resolve the charges. Employees?openly joked?about the compliance failures.?

Citadel CEO Ken Griffin said that he has?not supported?Donald Trump for president in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. "I'm so torn on this one," the hedge fund billionaire and Republican mega-donor told journalists. "I know who I'm going to vote for, but it's not with a smile on my face."

In this week's field report, here's Griffin speaking at the Knight Bagehot dinner.?Davide Barbuscia?and I sent the headline and story from a gala table.

Coming up, Tuesday is our next big earnings day, with Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup reporting. Morgan Stanley follows on Wednesday.

Sending good energy for the week,
