Why we use magic: reasons 11-20!

We already gave you ten excellent reasons to explain why we use magic in the learning and development space. Now here’s ten more!

It triggers curiosity

How did that pen disappear? How did the magician know what card I was thinking of? How did those coins move from one hand to another? And so on… Our workshop participants don’t even have to ask those questions, the quizzing is written all over their faces! We use that curiosity as a jumping off point for a deeper dive into wonder, innovation and creativity.

It teaches us about human behaviour?

Magicians are experts in human behaviour. They know how to capture or divert their audience’s attention, how to make you feel like you made a choice (when, ssssshhhh don’t tell anyone, you didn’t really have a choice) and even how to do something right in front of your eyes without you realising what’s really going on. Luckily we harness this power for good in our workshops.

It facilitates connections between people?

Even when we’ve worked with colleagues that have never met, by the end of an Abracademy session, they know far more about each other than after post-work drinks. Minus the hangover!

It's non-hierarchical?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re the CEO of a multinational company or you’re a team of one, everyone finds their own unique strengths in our workshops. Some people turn out to be great at sleight of hand, others are amazing storytellers. Whoever you are, you’ll find a superpower of your own.

It creates a shared experience?

Rather than forcing people to bond using confrontational ice-breakers, our sessions open people up at their own pace and in their own way. At the end of a workshop, participants feel they’ve experienced each other’s magic!

It reveals assumptions and biases?

We all have them and we’re blind to many of them! But through the power of magic, we shine a light on those shadow spots so they can be addressed and brought into self-awareness.?

It triggers problem-solving?

This follows on from the curiosity that’s sparked when someone experiences a magic trick. You wonder how the trick is done and then your brain automatically starts trying to figure out what happened. Again, we harness this process to expand problem-solving abilities - a very necessary skill in the workplace.

It creates memorable moments for participants

Who can forget a workshop where the room was filled with bunnies, your boss was sawn in half and a tiger disappeared? Ok, none of those things happen, but because our workshops are experiential and interactive, they’re not easily forgotten. They’re the opposite of death by presentation… (we know, that has its place sometimes!).
