WHY WE USE BALLAST (STONE) ON RAILWAY TRACK?

OVERVIEW

We have piles of stones around and under the #railway #tracks, They have #special #purpose regardless of area, country or region. #Globally they are of same shape, size and texture.?

Generally Track #ballast (stones) known as #track bed. You cannot through any kind of rock on #railway track. Every ballast (stone) have #special #characteristic shape and sizes. Their #surface is not smooth and their #edges are jagged(sharp).?

#Thickness of these #ballast usually range between 25-30cm varies depending on certain conditions pertaining of #geographical location of #railway #track.

Due to un-smooth surface and jagged edges they interlock with each other therefore stay in place due to vibration of train on track.

WHY WE CANNOT USE NORMAL STONES?

If we use normal ballast(stones), they will slip over each other and compromise the strength of track. As you might imagine, this can have catastrophic results.

There are number of purpose to use special ballast(stones).

  1. It holds the sleepers.
  2. Load distribution.
  3. Vibration dampening.
  4. Drainage.
  5. Prevent vegetation around the tracks.
  6. Noise absorption.
  7. Minimize the heat expansion.

IT HOLDS THE SLEEPER

With the vibration of #trains over the track ballast interlock with each other due to jagged edges. Which gives the strength to sleepers, make them tight and holds them on one place.

LOAD DISTRIBUTION

There are many passenger and cargo trains passing over the railway track exerting immense load on sleepers and track get distributed evenly though the track ballast.

VIBRATION DAMPENING

Ballast absorb the vibration generated by the train on track to make passenger journey smooth and stress free.

DRAINAGE

In bad raining season these ballast works as a drainage to avoid the water to accumulate around the rails which will result in bad corrosion, wear and tear.

PREVENT VEGATATION AROUND THE TRACK

Due to spaced between the ballast and continuous vibration from trains on track eliminate the chances of grass or other plant growth.

NOISE ABSORPTION

These ballast absorb the noise generated by trains in shape of vibration. Make the passenger journey smooth and also people living near to railway track stress free.

MINIMIZE THE HEAT EXPANSION

In summer season when the temperature is really hot railway tracks expand due to heat track ballast helps keep this heat expansion to a safe minimum, ensuring the efficiency and safety of track.
