Equity has become a central topic of discussion in many spheres of life, from politics to business to education.
This year’s International Womens' Day focus was around equity. But what exactly does it mean and why are we talking about it so much?
At its core, equity is about fairness and justice. It is the idea that everyone should have access to the same opportunities and be treated equally, regardless of their background or circumstances. Equity is different from equality, which is about treating everyone exactly the same, regardless of any differences they may have.
Equity recognises that not everyone starts from the same place, and that some people may need more support or resources to have an equal chance at success.
One of the reasons why equity has become such a hot topic is because of the growing recognition of systemic inequalities in society.
For centuries, certain groups of people have been disadvantaged due to their race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, or other factors. These inequalities have been perpetuated by laws, policies, and social norms that have favoured some groups over others.
For example, in the United States, Black people have faced systemic racism since the country's inception, from slavery to segregation to mass incarceration. Similarly, women have faced discrimination and sexism in the workplace and in other areas of life.
The recognition of these systemic inequalities has led to a growing movement for equity. People are demanding that institutions and systems be restructured to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. This can involve policies such as affirmative action in hiring and admissions, or it can involve changes to laws and regulations that prevent discrimination against marginalised groups.
Another reason why equity is such an important topic is because of its link to social justice.
Social justice is the idea that everyone deserves to live in a society that is fair and just, and that everyone has a right to basic human needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. Equity is a critical component of social justice because it ensures that everyone has an equal chance to achieve these basic needs. For example, if some people are denied access to healthcare due to their race or socioeconomic status, this is a violation of social justice. Equity demands that everyone be given the same opportunity to access healthcare, regardless of their background.
Finally, equity is important because it can lead to better outcomes for everyone.
When everyone has an equal chance to succeed, society as a whole benefits. For example, if a company hires a diverse group of employees, it is more likely to come up with innovative ideas and better serve a diverse customer base. Similarly, if a school provides extra support to students from low-income families, those students are more likely to succeed, which benefits the entire community.
In conclusion, equity is a critical concept that is essential to creating a fair and just society. It recognises that not everyone starts from the same place, and that some people need more support or resources to have an equal chance at success. Equity is important because it addresses systemic inequalities, promotes social justice, and leads to better outcomes for everyone. As we continue to discuss equity and work towards creating more equitable institutions and systems, we move closer to realising a society that is truly fair and just for all.
And it is difficult to think about, let alone achieve. Why? Because we are not consciously aware all the time about the different starting points. We talk a lot about today and the future, without understanding where the position we find ourselves in today comes from. What ideologies, beliefs, habits, truth, reality are embedded even in our DNA!
