- Have you ever wondered why we take positions during conversations even on issues were we don’t have personal stakes? We have views on most of the subjects, and tend to bring others to see from our perspective. Infact, the concept of Group discussion during placement interviews revolves around this very concept, isn’t it.
- Can this attribute of humans be categorised as being insincere or hypocritical? Maybe, after all we strongly rally behind the position we’ve taken and then want it to prevail by making others to acknowledge it. Appears that some unconscious cerebral procedure guides this behaviour in us, however, the moot point is what motivates us to behave in this manner.
- My take on the subject is:-
- We say things to be liked or seen as someone different from what we really are….it’s complex of sort.
- We have strong belief system like political/ religious belief and want to defend it at all costs.
- We are complex beings and may have changed opinions but for the sake of integrity will defend popular(acceptable) view in public domain.
- Many a times we develop an emotional attachment with an issue or view and want wider acceptance of the same as …OUR view.
- At times we argue for a point we don’t believe in because we believe it were to be true.
- The list is not exhaustive but only indicative of probable causes, some we may agree upon and on others we may have difference of opinion but the bottom line is that this desire to take position on issues we don’t believe in emanates from the eternal human yearning to be accepted among acquaintances and strangers alike. I'm sanguine that truth will emerge only when one is deposing in front of omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient Almighty himself.....don't you think so!!!!

Very well written Tarun. All opinions are coming from strong impressions in mind created from ones life experience. You cannot go beyond that. Mind is limited .. so refuses to accept anything else. And only when it is able to have a different experience or dissolve itself can accept others. Hence continues to hold a position.
