Why we started the Symposium on Securing the IoT
Why do we have the Symposium on Securing the IoT?
Retail Sector:
· Data breaches are on the rise. Since January 2017, at least 16 retailers were hacked and likely had information stolen from them.
· A report from cybersecurity firm Shape Security showed that almost 90% of the login attempts made on online retailers' websites are hackers using stolen data.
· Many of these breaches were caused by flaws in payment systems that were taken advantage of by hackers.
· This list includes Macy’s Sear, Delta, Best Buy, Saks, Lord & Taylor.
This is just one facet where we are vulnerable.
Healthcare Sector:
· Blue Cross patient data exposed for 3 months.
· Rasomware attacks in Hawaii breaches 41K patient records.
· 420K Augusta U patient records over 1 year.
· 1.4 M records in Unity Health by phishing attack.
· Medical device Manufacturer, Inogen
There were many more >30 healthcare attacks so far this year including:
Aultman Health, Cass Regional, Middletown Medical, Virtua Medical, Banner Health, Lifebridge Health.
These hacks are mostly phishing and ransomware attacks.
The presentations at the Symposium on Securing the IoT focus on protecting against these types of attacks; what companies can do to protect both their patient’s data and their systems. The companies presenting are some of the leaders in IoT security.
