Why We Started Joy of Giving: Reducing Waste and Creating a Sustainable Future
Did you know that in Australia alone, approximately 27 million toys are thrown away each year, ending up in landfills?
Toys can have a significant environmental impact, and as a society, we tend to underestimate the costs associated with their afterlife, including recycling and landfill.
One of the main reasons why so many toys end up in landfills is because we lack efficient ways to reuse preloved toys. Toys are often stored away in cupboards or thrown away because they are no longer needed, resulting in wasted resources and increased landfill waste.
Conventional charity shop models entail a significant amount of labour and cost to run, and they often encounter difficulties in effectively managing a large volume of resources, particularly when it comes to toys. This is because toys are harder to process and require a substantial amount of storage space.
Toys are also challenging to recycle, and only a few specialist recyclers can handle them in Australia. Therefore, it's crucial to maximise their reuse before considering recycling as an option. Recycling is a resource-intensive process that requires a significant amount of energy and resources, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation.
Considering the significant environmental impact of toys and the lack of efficient ways to reuse them, that's why we started the toy reuse initiative. By encouraging people to reuse their preloved toys, we can reduce waste and extend the lifespan of these valuable resources. Additionally, this initiative aims to support families who cannot afford new toys by providing them with preloved toys. Through this initiative, we can work towards creating a sustainable future where resources are valued, and waste is minimised. Join us in this effort towards a more sustainable and responsible society.
