Why we should abstain from changing the Constitution of the AASW: 8 questions the Board must answer

At the next AGM the AASW Board wants the membership to sign off in one package, a set of largely unrelated constitutional changes. I am urging caution.

I have put the following questions to the AASW and have not yet received a substantive reply.

  1. Why is the Board proposing to remove our values statement from the Constitution? (our values are at the very heart of our profession)
  2. How can the Board guarantee Branch Presidents' involvement in strategic planning if this is being removed from the Constitution?
  3. How do the proposed changes to membership clauses protect us from future rogue Boards, given that future Boards continue to determine university accreditation standards and and approve university courses?
  4. How do we provide for the continuing membership eligibilty of overseas graduates with 3 year degrees  coupled with acceptable recognition of prior learning? And in case of New Zealand graduates, the continuing approval of 3 year degrees?
  5. What is the justification for barring students from National Director roles?
  6. Why is more power being concentrated in the office of National President through the abolition of a Board Executive?
  7. What is the envisaged role of Vice Presidents subsequent to the abolition of a Board Executive?
  8. Why are there no mechanisms outlined for the speedy expulsion of National Directors who refuse to resign, after being found in breach of Our Code of Ethics (to a level whereby any other member would be removed from membership)? How can the AASW protect itself from costly litigation if a Director challenges whatever mechanisms are put in place?

If you agree with any or all of my concerns, or agree with me that the amendments should be put separately, allocate your proxy to me. You can find out how to give me your proxy, and the background to why I am asking these questions at my blog, https://vittoriocintio.com/

Thanks for the heads up and awareness.
