Why are we reinventing the Vaccine Wheel?

Throughout this Covid 19 challenge, I have worried about the process the Federal Government would take to roll out the vaccine. First they were late to queue with the various firms making the product. Then they invested millions in Canada with agents that did not deliver. Now, Ottawa is relying on the military to make sure the product gets to its destination.

We have a tested system for inoculations. One that relies on our local pharmacy to get the product into the arms of the population. Every year like clockwork, Canadians get their local pharmacist or physician to administer their needed shots. Should a person need something more difficult, the local health agency did the job. Young and old are accommodated with little fuss and smooth performance.

We are now faced with waiting months for protection. Less than 1% of Ontarians are protected and the rest of us will wait until late summer or the fall. Another lost year! If this is the case, we will be more unhappy than we are today.

Attached to this piece is an article from the morning paper in Daytona Beach, Florida. It speaks to the efficiency being used in West Virginia. Yes, that's right, West Virginia. They passed on the federal government program being run by large pharmacies and put the job in hands of the local druggist. WV, has now protected about 8% of their residents, who much like us are dispersed in small towns and valleys throughout the state.

What a novel idea.

We deserve better!

One more point. The Government of Ontario is not fully out of the woods on this challenge. This said, the federal government controls the amount of vaccine in the pipeline nation wide therefore, I believe they should shoulder the majority of the responsibility to provide more to the provinces and territories. This said, both can learn from the WV experience.

Having vaccinations that require extreme cold to preserve them is surely an impediment in empowering pharmacies to deliver the vaccine. But really, if only the government of the day in 1986 did not sell off Caunaught Labratories to foreign interests, we could be producing our own vaccine. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connaught_Laboratories?fbclid=IwAR2MgSUqHzuOtezoUGBKD2VJ2ZH-DQlXTImowdQpIwUxVpIRFmcc0BqS1pk

Agreed and well said! Pharmacies could be a key part of rapidly vaccinating millions of Canadians each week.. a distributed regional system that's ready to go.. got my family flu shots in September at our local pharmacy.. could easily use that model and ready infrastructure for COVID... we just need the vaccines now..
