Why We Need to Start Thinking of XR Experiences as Physical Places

As extended reality (XR) – encompassing virtual and augmented experiences – gains popularity, a common question emerges: "Where should we meet in VR?" For those who work in XR, the answer might feel obvious: the experience isthe destination. But for many, thinking of XR as a “place” can make virtual environments more tangible and accessible. Like a café, park or office these spaces have a persistent presence, waiting to be visited.

Consider how we think of physical spaces – they exist whether people are present or not. Similarly, a VR lounge or AR exhibit is "there," ready for exploration, whether fully populated or empty. This framing helps us grasp XR as a series of places, each with its own purpose and atmosphere.

The Importance of Staffed Digital Spaces

In physical spaces, some places are staffed while others are self-guided. XR environments are following a similar model. Recently, Meta has begun staffing some of its VR experiences, recognizing that real-time moderation can create a safer, more respectful environment. This added "presence" of staff doesn’t just enhance the experience but also acts as a deterrent against negative behaviors, an issue that continues to challenge digital public spaces. Just as with physical spaces, knowing someone is “present” changes how people act and interact, making XR environments more inviting and secure.

Making XR Accessible Through Familiar Concepts

For new users, XR can feel abstract or intimidating. Thinking of it as a "place" transforms it from a tech phenomenon into a tangible space – a café, a lounge, a gallery – somewhere you can "go." Framing XR as a destination makes it easier to understand and participate, bridging the gap between the digital and physical worlds.

As XR becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, it’s time to view these experiences not as temporary apps but as places we visit. Whether staffed or unstaffed, XR environments gain a level of permanence and accessibility that invites repeated use. By seeing them as digital destinations, we move one step closer to making XR a truly shared part of our collective, lived landscape.
