Why We Need AI That Doesn't Keep Secrets

Imagine using a security camera that doesn’t let you see the footage. Sounds impractical, right? That’s the issue with some AI in cybersecurity—it doesn’t explain its reasoning. It’s like a black box that keeps secrets.

So, why do we want AI to share its secrets?

  1. Trust: If your AI guards your data, wouldn’t you sleep better knowing how it decides what’s a threat?
  2. Better Tools: When AI tells us how it catches cyber threats, we can teach it to do better. That means fewer mistakes and better protection.
  3. Everyone Can Follow Along : Not everyone speaks ‘tech’. AI that can explain itself in simple terms means everyone from the boardroom to the IT department is in the loop.
  4. No More Crying Wolf: If your AI keeps saying there's a problem when there isn't, you might start ignoring it. That's dangerous. AI that explains itself helps us spot the actual wolves.


Black Box vs Glass Box

The black box is a mystery, but the glass box shows you exactly what’s inside.

The black box is often seen as a metaphor for non-transparent processes, and in the realm of AI, it's a concept we're moving away from. Transparency in AI helps us understand, trust, and effectively manage the technology that plays an increasingly pivotal role in our cybersecurity measures.

Making AI a trusted cybersecurity team member, not a mysterious stranger, is challenging, and I am proud to be part of this challenge.

Thanks for sharing Alsa Tibbit Transparency in AI models is a growing challenge. There are standards emerging such as the OWASP CycloneDX SBOM/xBOM Standard which provides a way of describing an ML model (and the software which it needs) in an unambiguous way. The big challenge however is acquiring the data so it can be described in a standard format. Which is why your black box analogy is so perfect as it highlights the need for increasing the transparency of all of our solutions.
