Why We Honour?

Why We Honour?

"The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law". Deuteronomy 29:29 (NKJV)

Many people do not understand honour. It is a secret system that differentiates those who go on to do great things. Anything that is a mystery requires a certain dimension of explanation and revelation for it to really be understood. Living your life purely based on common sense and common knowledge can lead to a failure to understand honour and its benefits.

?

So, what is honour? In the simplest form, honour is to hold in high regard, to give great esteem, or to highly respect. A life of honour also has great benefits. Here are two main reasons why we honour.

?

1.???? Honour preserves our lives.

?

When God spoke the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20, after detailing how the Israelites should relate to Him in verses 2-11, He then commanded that honour be shown to parents in the order of the father first and then the mother. This was not a suggestion or a nice-to-do but a command.

?

God emphasises honouring others so greatly that He associates it with the promise of a long life. While habits like regular exercise and healthy eating can contribute to longevity, they do not provide a definitive guarantee, especially within the framework of the Kingdom. However, as prescribed, honouring one's parents assures the long life many strive to achieve.

?

"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you." Exodus 20:12 (NKJV)

?

2.???? Honour guarantees a full life.

?

Ephesians 6 delves into the benefits of honour, illustrating its enduring significance. While many view the Ten Commandments as an Old Testament directive, God reaffirmed the principle of honour in the New Testament through Paul's teachings. This emphasises its ongoing relevance and critical role in the Kingdom of God.

?

Ephesians 6:1-3 highlights another promise of honour—wellness. Living life fully isn't just about prayer and reading the Bible; it also involves honouring others. God has embedded the key to a long and fulfilling life in the act of honour.

?

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honour your father and mother", which is the first commandment with promise: "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth." Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV)

Who We Should Honour

For believers, there is always someone to honour. Throughout the Bible, which serves as our life manual, God consistently reminds us of the various authorities deserving honour. Here are seven such authorities:

?

  1. God – This means honouring His name, word, work, principles, and people. (Exodus 20:2-11)
  2. Parents – Be it biological or spiritual parents. (Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:1-3)
  3. Masters – Those in positions of seniority as either a Boss, Manager, Leader, etc. (1 Timothy 6:1)
  4. King – As the one to which God has elected to rule in our current times (1 Peter 2:17)
  5. All men – Showing no partiality or discrimination, we are to treat everyone with respect (1 Peter 2:17)
  6. Marriage – The institution that demonstrates the union between Christ and the church and the one God Himself calls the most honourable. (Hebrews 13:4-6)
  7. Prophets, Pastors, Priests – The ones in pastoral office that God has hand-picked as His vessels to lead His body (1 Timothy 5:17)

?

Honour is a principle that God has programmed into nature. It is a system that benefits those who wholly and genuinely commit to it. As you apply honour these principles, may God cause every benefit attached to honour to have a full expression in your life.
