Why We All Wait Until It’s Too Late to Invest in Our Health (And How To Change That)

Good Morning Brain Warriors,
Welcome to the latest edition of #CognitiveMastery! Today, we are discussing limiting beliefs and how those pesky subconscious, neurologically engraved thoughts are keeping us stuck.
Ever wondered why you’re more likely to upgrade your car than your health? Or why you keep waiting for December 31st to make new resolutions? Or why you always say, “I’ll start tomorrow” – but tomorrow keeps being… tomorrow?
I get it. Most of us know we should be doing more for our health, but something always seems to get in the way. The problem isn’t a lack of knowledge – it’s the limiting beliefs that keep us stuck.
Let me break down some of the most common ones I hear, and why they might sound eerily familiar…
“I Don’t Have Time”
This is a true classic. You’re busy. I’m busy. We’re all juggling work, life, and the occasional Netflix binge. But here’s the thing: if you don’t make time for your health now, you might be forced to make a lot more time for illness later. Think of it as a future you problem that’s waiting to bite you… unless you handle it today.
Tip: Start small. 10 minutes of movement, a couple of healthier meals, or even one good night of sleep can make a huge difference over time. No one’s asking you to become a health guru overnight. Unless you want to… in that case, go for it!
“It’s Too Expensive”
If you’ve ever hesitated to invest in a health coach, gym membership, or better food because it’s “too expensive,” I want you to think about this: you’re either paying for your health now or paying for disease later. We tend to forget how much healthcare costs can add up. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather spend my money on things that make me feel alive than on treatments that make me feel… well, less dead.
“I’ll Start Tomorrow”
Ah, tomorrow. The land where all great plans go to die. You tell yourself you’ll start eating better, exercising, or meditating tomorrow, but when it comes… there's always next Monday, right? It’s like we’re all stuck in this mental Groundhog Day where the next healthy habit is just around the corner – yet we never quite turn that corner.
Storytime: I had a client, Lena, who always dreaded speaking up in meetings. For years, she told herself she’d start working on her confidence “soon.” Guess what? “Soon” never came – until we started working together. After a few coaching sessions focused on breaking down her limiting beliefs, she started thriving in those meetings. The trick? We took the smallest step first. And that tiny momentum got the ball rolling.
“I’m Fine Now, Thank You ...”
You know that little voice that says, “Well, I’m not sick, so everything’s fine”? Yeah, that’s the same voice that pretends that packet of chips is a vegetable. Just because you’re not sick now doesn’t mean your body isn’t sending you red flags. Chronic diseases are often like bad houseguests – they show up uninvited and stay way longer than expected.
Don’t wait for the alarm bells to ring before you start paying attention. By then, it might be too late to hit snooze. Work on your body awareness.
“It Won’t Work for Me”
This one stings a little, right? Maybe you’ve tried things in the past that didn’t work, and now you’re convinced nothing will. But here’s the deal: just because one method didn’t click doesn’t mean none will. Your brain is wired for change (thanks, neuroplasticity!). Sometimes, it just needs the right environment and approach.
“I’m Too Old for This”
If I had a few pounds for every time someone said they were “too old to change,” I’d be… well, still writing this newsletter because I love it! But seriously, your brain and body can adapt at any age. Sure, you might not be doing marathons at 70 (or maybe you will – who knows? at the end of the day, it always comes back to mindset), but you can still create healthy habits that add years to your life and life to your years.
So, why don’t most people invest in their health?
It’s usually not the money, time, or complexity. It’s these limiting beliefs. But here’s the good news: beliefs can change, and so can you. Change your mindset, change your thoughts, change your actions, change your future. I’ve seen it happen time and again with my clients.
If you’re ready to break free from the habits and beliefs holding you back, now’s the perfect time. There are still two months left in the year – plenty of time to start making changes that could transform your health and mindset going into the new year.
Until next time, keep those neurones firing!
Your brain & health coach,
Thierry
