Why we all need a clear objective when driving risk management?
Over the past several months I have taken a focus on risk management and how it is perceived, conducted and even reviewed in spaces both inside and outside of my day job. The most simplistic aspect which is arguably the most important? is the loss of sight or recognition of what is the true objective of why we are doing what we are doing. From our day to day work environments where we can become so tactical that we lose sight of what is the true business objective and the value we are trying to achieve in our remit of control. The flip side of this being our personal lives, where we set goals but do not consider where we may possibly fail so we can mitigate against potential threats (as life happens) or even identifying potential opportunities on how we can even supercharge our efforts. The idea sounds so simple but many of us do not put effort in understanding the objective or scope and requirements of what we are driving for and what success feels and looks like. This is one of the many contributing factors which leads to risk logs to not being fully utilised, issues occurring which require supermen and women to save the day and the initial set goals missed significantly.

A question we all need to ask ourselves with the projects and programmes we are involved in is what are we driving to? And what are the boundaries?? What is the objective for this specific time period? From this how do we set critical key performance indicators to ensure we are on plan to the set objective? And how then do we make these key performance indicators visible and meaningful for all contributing to the goal.
