Why Vistage works
I have always been drawn to the following pieces of wisdom and they continue to echo in my head and guide my heart as I facilitate Vistage meetings. There is so much precedent in seeking the counsel of your peers and I have personally listened to so many "a-ha" moments that have turned into hundreds of thousands of dollars both saved and generated.
Far beyond that, I have seen good leaders transform themselves into great leaders. This occurred because they fought their own demons and were willing to address their own behaviors which enabled them to unleash similar performance in others. They provided the example and others rose to the challenge.
Take a few minutes and read through these and see if any of them resonate with you...
- "We hear only those questions for which we are in a position to find answers." Friedrich Nietzsche
- "Question everything. Learn something. Answer nothing." Euripedes
- "A prudent question is one half of wisdom." Francis Bacon
- "Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth." "Marcus Aurelius
- "The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize." - Robert Hughes
- "Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers." - Voltaire
- "Rank does not confer privilege or give power. It imposes responsibility." Peter Drucker
- "Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness in other people." - Carl Jung
- "Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do. - Goethe
- "When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. - Viktor Frankl
- "In times of rapid change, experience could be your worst enemy." - J. Paul Getty
- "It is a bad plan that admits no modification." Publilius Syrus
- "Wisdom tends to grow in proportion to one's awareness of one's ignorance." Anthony de Mello
I am left with more questions than answers. That said, I do believe we will all be better for considering bigger questions that expand our thoughts past achieving results and more towards our impact on people.
As is the case with most things, this is simple not easy. This is the hard work that it takes to lead and that is no bullshit. If it were easy, everyone would do. It is not and not many do.
If you choose to, you are one of The Relentless Few and I am grateful for your leadership...the world needs it.
