How to inspire the next generation of women in science
Joanne Woo
Global VP, Division Head of Marketing & Communications at ABB | Curator, TEDxMelbourne
Throughout history, women in science have shaped the world as we know it. Marie Curie revolutionized our understanding of radioactivity. Tu Youyou’s discovery of artemisinin saved millions of lives from malaria. Rosalind Franklin’s work was key to discovering the structure of DNA. Yet, despite their profound impact, women have had to fight harder to be seen, heard, and recognised for their contributions.
And the gender gap still persists today:
These numbers are not just statistics - they are a reflection of the systemic barriers that continue to hold women back. And they are why I constantly advocate for women in science.
I do this because I’ve seen firsthand what happens when brilliant women are given the stage to share their ideas. Through TEDxMelbourne, we’ve had the privilege of showcasing incredible female scientists, including Professor of Bioarchaeology Ronika Power, Astrophysicist Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, CEO of ATSE Kylie Walker, Behavioural Scientist Patrycja Slawuta, Futurist Dr Catherine Ball, and Medical Doctor Dr Olivia Ly Lesslar - among many others. Their insights have challenged minds, sparked discussions, and inspired action.
Through the Superstars of STEM program, I’ve had the honour to mentor extraordinary women like Dr Susi Seibt, Volcano Scientist Assoc. Professor Teresa Ubide, and Zoologist Dr Tamara Keeley - scientists who are pushing boundaries in biophysics, geochemistry, and conservation. They are proof that science is not just about knowledge; it’s about impact.
But for me, this is more than just a professional commitment - it’s personal.
I do this for my daughter. I do this for all the young girls who are growing up in a world where they are influenced by content more than ever before in history. Their open eyes take in everything around them. And I want them to be shaped by voices of substance, not just by those who are loud.
Instead of having content driven by opinions with no real depth, I want scientists to have more of a voice. Instead of feeling limited by societal stereotypes, I want them to feel unlimited in how they can change the world.
This is why at ABB, we created Unstoppable - a platform to tell the stories of amazing women in industry. Because every story counts. What I’m most proud of with Unstoppable is that it created a movement. After launching it, more and more women from around the world were highlighted, their accomplishments celebrated, their stories told. And with every story, another barrier was broken.
When young girls see women thriving in science, they see what’s possible.
When we amplify women’s voices, we inspire the next generation of leaders.
When we invest in equity, we unlock the full potential of science for a better world.
So today, on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let’s not only celebrate the women who are shaping our world, but commit to ensuring that more of them rise, lead, and are recognised for their brilliance.
If you know a woman in science who inspires you, tag her. Let’s amplify her voice.
