Why Verified UT Testing Matters for Forged Components
In high-stakes industries, the structural integrity of forged components is non-negotiable. While some manufacturers label parts as “Capable of ASTM A388,” this only implies that a component could pass ultrasonic testing (UT)—not that it has been tested. For critical applications, only forgings of proven soundness are acceptable.
Ultrasonic testing per ASTM A388 is a non-destructive method that identifies internal defects such as porosity, inclusions, and cracks. However, many parts are delivered in an “as forged” condition with a rough, oxidized surface that prevents accurate testing. To allow for valid UT testing, a minimum surface finish of 250 RMS is required, as rougher surfaces weaken signal transmission and obscure defects.
