VCs Are Still Pouring Billions into Generative AI Startups: What Does This Mean for the Future?
Generative AI is rapidly transforming industries by enabling machines to create text, audio, video, and more. Despite a challenging economic environment, venture capital (VC) investments in generative AI startups remain robust. This newsletter dives into why VCs are pouring billions into this sector, the challenges these startups face, and what the future holds for generative AI.
The Investment Landscape
In the first half of 2024, from January to July 16, generative AI startups raised an impressive $12.3 billion from venture capitalists, according to Crunchbase data shared with TechCrunch. This figure indicates that generative AI companies are on track to match or exceed the $21.8 billion raised in 2023. Here’s how the H1 2024 investments broke down by stage:
- 198 angel/seed deals: $500 million
- 39 early-stage deals: $8.7 billion
- 18 late-stage deals: $3.1 billion
Early-stage startups have been the primary beneficiaries of this funding surge. Notable examples include:
- Elon Musk’s xAI : Raised $6 billion in May.
- Moonshot AI (China): Raised $1 billion in February.
- Mistral AI : Raised $502.6 million in June.
- Glean: Raised $203.2 million in February.
- Cognition: Raised $175 million in April.
Why Are VCs Betting Big on Generative AI?
VCs are concentrating their investments on a select few startups they believe have the highest chances of success. According to Chris Metinko, an analyst and senior reporter at Crunchbase, investors are letting less promising startups "wither away" at the earlier stages. This strategic focus aims to mitigate risks associated with legal and regulatory challenges that generative AI companies might face.
Generative AI models often train on data sourced from public web pages, which can include copyrighted material. Companies argue that fair use protects them, but it’s unclear how courts will ultimately rule. This uncertainty has led some startups to secure licensing deals with copyright holders proactively.

The Challenges Ahead
Despite significant investments, the future of many generative AI businesses remains uncertain. High-quality training data is becoming scarcer and more expensive as startups exhaust the web’s supply and more creators block data scraping. According to estimates, the market for AI training data will grow from $2.5 billion to $30 billion within a decade.
Moreover, training these models is becoming increasingly costly. For instance, OpenAI’s GPT-4 training cost $78 million, while Google Gemini’s price tag was $191 million, as reported by a recent Stanford study. These substantial upfront investments mean that few generative AI startups are currently profitable.
The Financial Reality
Even industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic are struggling with profitability. According to The Information, OpenAI, which generates around $3.4 billion in revenue, could still lose $5 billion this year. This financial strain highlights the long-term nature of investments in generative AI.
Strategic Bets by Big Tech
Despite these challenges, major tech investors such as Google, Amazon, and Nvidia continue to see generative AI as a strategic bet. They believe that the potential rewards justify the risks, particularly as these technologies become integral to various applications and services.
The Future of Generative AI
The future of generative AI hinges on startups' ability to navigate the legal, regulatory, and financial challenges they face. If these hurdles prove insurmountable, the current investment bubble could burst. However, if startups can overcome these challenges, generative AI has the potential to revolutionize numerous industries.
