Why using coreless motors?

Why using coreless motors?

DC motor is still largely used in mechanical applications. Because it's easy: just apply a DC voltage and it simply rotates. The higher the applied voltage, the higher the speed. Invert the supply voltage and the DC motor shaft rotates in the opposite direction. Exactly as you expect.

Why FAULHABER coreless DC motors are better than other motor technologies? The main characteristics is the absence of iron core inside the winding. This gives many benefits.

  • The powerful neodymium magnet is placed inside the winding space: with same motor size the coreless winding has wider diameter than iron core motors, delivering higher torque.
  • No cogging torque, due to the magnetic attraction between winding and magnet: the rotor operation is very smooth, without vibrations even at low speed.
  • High efficiency, typically between 80% and 90%, for long battery operated applications.
  • Low rotor inertia, reaching high acceleration at start-up.
  • Low rotor inductance, thus fast response to current variations, reaching high dynamics without sparks which reduce the motor lifetime.
  • Linear relationship between speed and torque applied
  • Linear relationship between current and torque applied.
  • The winding design is optimized to work also with extended temperature range, typically from -30°C to +125°C for most of FAULHABER DC motors.

The customization possibility, from the simple combination with encoders, gearheads, brake and screws to get a complete drive system, up to a complete custom solution integrated in a mechatronic subsystem, ready for plug and play, is another asset for FAULHABER DC motors.

Coreless motors have higher price than iron core motors, but you get higher value in terms of performance, lifetime, efficiency and reliability in your application.
