What is Paid Social Media?

Organic social media is content that is accessible to all users for free across social media platforms. This differs from paid social media because this is when a brand pays various media platforms money to display specific content to targeted audiences.

  • Promote Deals, Content, and Events
  • Ability to Target Ideal Customers
  • Increases the Number of Leads and Conversions


When integrating paid social media, it is important to remember that not all promotional posts need to be paid and that some posts may perform better through organic social media. However, when using organic social media, it is still important to boost it so that more consumers are able to see this content.

In order to best optimize your advertisements, the use of A/B testing is extremely helpful. Understanding the landscape of social media and your target audience are also important elements in supporting effective social media.


Influencer Marketing

Another form of marketing that is within paid social media is known as influencer marketing. Influencer marketing is the practice of working with influencers or creative individuals to create collaborative content in order to promote valuable brand content.

When working with influencers, be open and honest with your influencer to ensure that your creative individual understands your goals and KPIs. Once influencers are able to fully recognize these objectives, this will further optimize their ability to create content that is suitable for your individual business. Building a relationship with your influencer could also increase your organization's network of people through word of mouth.

How to Use Paid Social Media

Western Washington University MBA Program

In order to further understand paid social media, a proposal as to how Western Washington University's (WWU) Master of Business Administration (MBA) can integrate paid social media to increase brand awareness and applications will be discussed.

The Western MBA program can reach these goals by running paid advertisements through the social media platform of LinkedIn. The platform of LinkedIn is suggested to be used for the Western MBA program because this is a professional business-focused social media platform It is also suggested because it is more likely that those who are interested in entering an MBA program are also already on LinkedIn.

By running paid advertisements through LinkedIn, WWU can specifically target displaying these ads to profiles of those with educational backgrounds in business. Furthermore, WWU can also not only target an audience with an educational background but WWU can target soon-to-be graduating students as well. An important audience for WWU to specifically target is not only WWU College of Business & Economic students but also business students from other competing universities as well such as the University of Washington. This is an extreme advantage to WWU because this avoids promoting content that is unfit for those uninterested in the MBA program.
