Why Is Unemployment Job Search So Tough When The Unemployment Rate Is So Low?

It's natural for unemployed job seekers to compare their job search to the unemployment rate.


And it's natural to wonder why their search is tougher than they thought, especially with such a low unemployment rate.


Here are 2 reasons your unemployment job search so tough when the unemployment rate is so low:


  • Only 2% of your competition is also unemployed: You're not just competing against 1.9M other unemployed candidates - You're also competing against the 80M currently employed who are expected to change jobs in 2024. Do you think your search will be more successful if you focus on competing more effectively than the currently employed job seekers, rather than worrying about other unemployed candidates?
  • Your unemployment rate is 100% when you're unemployed: The only unemployment rate that affects your job search is your personal unemployment rate ... and that's 100% while you're still unemployed. Concentrate your efforts on how you'll reduce it to zero, while ignoring government stats (that don't mean anything to your own search).


And here are 2 ways to make your unemployment job search go faster:


  • Recognize and the risks you present to employers: You probably don't feel that you're a risk to employers, because you know that you're awesome. But your job search problems are perceived as risks by employers.

Employers perceive that you're riskier than other candidates when you're unemployed (were you let go because you were an average or below average performer?), over 40 (are you worth your higher perceived costs?), changing careers (will you be worth the longer ramp-up time compared to others who already have job function and/or industry experience?), raise/ promotion (are you worth it?), and other of the most difficult job search problems.?

  • Do more to overcome those risks: To overcome these risks, you need to do more of what is important to employers, proving you'll do more on the job (that you'll be worth it). Employers don't care how many resumes you send, but there are many things you can change in your resume/interview/and job search strategies to prove to employers that you'll do more on the job.


The reason most unemployed job seekers struggle (no matter the unemployment rate) is when they don't recognize the risks they present, and they don't do more of the things that employers care about. Instead, you're probably searching the same way everyone else does, by applying to random jobs online, increasing the volume of resumes sent (in an attempt to make your search faster), and hope that you'll get lucky ... but instead wonder why you don't stand out.

And, how does one overcome the age bias- AGEISM, you can't undo being over 49, over 55, etc. EEOC nails every group discrimination except for age. If they perceive a seasoned employee will cost more, then offer a starting wage equal to a younger worker, and allow them to prove themselves. Then, have frequent review chances for upward income to pay them what they're worth. Many corps make an assumption a low-ball offer to a 55+ won't work, but it will if you can promise them advancement opportunities. Doesn't hurt to ask, and most don't.
