This Is Why Uber Need's Their Money: Man Scams Uber Eats Out of Millions
RSG Contributor Tyler Philbrook?talks about about the elaborate scheme that conned Uber out of millions.
As my wife likes to put it, we’ve been getting “slave wages” for a long time now for working.
Drivers have to do what they can to make more money, through starting other side hustles, multi-apping, or even getting a regular W2 job.
But for 2 drivers in Florida, that just wasn’t enough.
See, they wanted more, much more than what Uber was paying them, and they took it. The really bad part is that honest drivers make less money because of things like this.
What Happened?
Trayon Morgan and Roy Blackwood stole over a million dollars from Uber.
Their system was relatively simple in execution. They would place an order on the Uber app at grocery stores and pharmacies.
They would then make sure that they were the “driver” that accepted the order, which would put funds on their Uber card to pay for those groceries. They would then cancel the order but still buy things with the Uber card, mostly gift cards in amounts as much as $700.
On one day, they went to multiple different Walgreens and were able to get over $5,000 by doing this.
They also used multiple names, emails, driver's licenses, and anything else they could get to make different customer and driver accounts to attempt to cover their tracks.
After over a year, they were finally caught, but not before they cheated Uber out of over $1,000,000.?

How Does This Affect Uber Drivers?
A lot of things go through my mind when I hear about this.?
First, how do you ensure that you’re the driver that gets a particular order? I’ve tried to do things like that in the past: have a friend order something from UberEats or DoorDash with me sitting outside the restaurant. Despite being literally in the parking lot, I still don’t get the request.
With that being the case, how did these two manage to do it so often and so well that they were able to get over a million dollars?
The other thing that comes to my mind is that it starts to make sense why Uber doesn’t pay their drivers as much as they used to, or in my opinion, they should.
Uber has finally made a profit, but for the last decade, they have done nothing but lose money, and that doesn’t even take into account large crimes like this. To make that profit, they have to cut elsewhere, which means drivers pay.
As a driver for Uber, this means that they’ve cut pay over the years because of things like this and not making money from other ways as well.

How Does This Affect You?
As a driver, a story like this does not affect your day-to-day life. You still go out and drive like you normally would. You decline more orders than you accept, you strive your best to help your customers, and you make what you can.
But things like this do affect you while you’re driving.
Have you ever gone to a restaurant and they wouldn’t let you take an order until they saw you accept it on the screen?
Have you seen empty shelves where the orders used to be but are now in the back?
Have you ever had to sign an actual sheet stating who you are, the name of the customer, what you’re picking up, what time you got there, and when you left?
All of these things are because people are committing crimes.
Some have gone into restaurants, taken an order, gone out to their car, and canceled the order. Maybe that’s the only way they could think of getting food.
A lot of restaurants have started moving the ready food somewhere that drivers have to ask for it because random people were coming into the store and stealing food.
And some restaurants have just heard about things like this that have made them change how they do things.
This makes your life more difficult and delays you getting in and getting out, and if people weren’t trying to cheat others, then it wouldn’t affect you.

Over the years of driving for Uber, passengers and eats, the amount that Uber pays have been less and less.
Conclusion
Uber is a huge company. As such, I’m confident that it has insurance to cover things like losing a million dollars from two guys in Florida.
Drivers really don’t care how much money Uber, DoorDash, GrubHub, or any of the other gig apps lose. What we care about is how much money we make.
Things continue to get worse. Inflation is at an all-time high, and food is more expensive than ever.?
People are just trying to do the best they can. People like Trayon Morgan and Roy Blackwood give drivers a bad name.?
Though we suffer the consequences of it, we can still make an honest living by working not just hard but smart.
