Why Trying To Sell More Experience For Age 40+ Job Seekers Usually Doesn't Help

One of the reasons many age 40, 50 and 60+ job seekers struggle, is because you try to sell your experience.

What you don't realize is that selling your experience makes you look expensive. But it rarely makes you look like the right candidate for the job, no matter how much experience you have. Even if you meet 100% of the job description, you're rarely going to get the offer when you sell yourself based on experience.

Instead, you get feedback that "we found someone who was a better fit", or that "you're overqualified".

When you focus on experience, you tell hiring managers that you’re a commodity, so employers will buy that commodity experience at the cheapest price. Because job seeker competition levels are now at the highest in the past decade, there are so many people who can claim experience, that you’ll be invisible to employers if you try to sell your experience.

When you focus on your expertise, you’re telling hiring managers that you’re a good problem solver - You’re qualified for the job. Even if an employer needs your expertise, you're competing against many other qualified candidates with similar expertise. You’ll be viewed as one of many, and employers will choose less expensive competitors when you aren’t able to significantly differentiate yourself from cheaper solutions.

But when you’re able to differentiate yourself with impact, you’ll be viewed as inexpensive related to the impact you can provide. When you sell impact well, you'll be viewed as a steal, compared to your competition.

Here's one of many real-life examples that shows you how selling impact can help you beat job search ageism. This is from one of my age 40+ unemployed clients, who landed her next job weeks after subscribing to my group coaching program, and DM'd me to deliver this good news:

"I met the HM and after sharing my impact on previous roles - I got the job on the spot."

The best thing is that every job seeker could sell high amounts of impact ... but few actually do (because no one has taught you how).

So when you learn how to sell yourself based on impact in your resume and interviews, it puts you head-and-shoulders over other candidates (because they're selling themselves as a commodity, based on their experience and expertise).

During my next free Resume Webinar, Beating Job Search Ageism, I'll show you how to sell yourself more effectively, so you'll make age your superpower and employers will clearly see that you're worth higher compensation than younger candidates. No matter what your compensation requirements, I'll show you how to prove to employers that you're a steal, compared to the impact you can deliver.

When we're done with that, I'll teach you other ways to overcome age bias, so you can accelerate your job search so much, you can find your next job by year-end when you're over 40.

Experience is important as it provides justification that you really can accomplish what you say you can. But, employers are looking for employees that can have an impact and provide value. Most job seekers that I meet don't seem to understand that concept. They talk, often extensively, about all the jobs they've had. Hiring managers really don't care. Any job seekers that continues that approach is asking others to define their value in the market. What sales person would ever do that? Job seekers need to control the narrative and make themselves relevant for the hiring manager.
