Why too much choice is just too much

Having a wide range of options suggests freedom and possibility, and that's a good thing, right?

Well, not when I go shopping in some mega supermarket. Who needs row upon row of breakfast cereal? The overwhelming amount of choice is paralysing. Too much choice causes stress and proves counter-productive.

Even too much of a good thing is still just too much. It's the Paradox of Choice: when given too many options, people feel overwhelmed. More can obviously be less. We could certainly do with less of just about everything – except love.

More often than not, the superlative of helpful grammar is too much of a good thing. Then, comprehensive becomes incomprehensible and exhaustive proves exhausting. If more is less, then less must be more: less grammar, less jargon, and less breakfast cereal.
