Why a 'No' Today Doesn't Mean a Closed Door Tomorrow

Why a 'No' Today Doesn't Mean a Closed Door Tomorrow

When pursuing career opportunities in the USA, rejection can feel like a setback. But what if I told you that a "no" today could lead to a "yes" tomorrow? Your journey isn’t defined by a single outcome but by the impressions and connections you make along the way. Let me share how resilience and preparation can turn a temporary no into a future yes.

My Journey with Rejection

When I moved to the USA in 2018, I faced countless rejections. One of the most memorable was with Landstar. It was my first in-person interview for a corporate role, and I left feeling optimistic. However, I wasn’t selected for the position. At the time, it was disheartening, but I didn’t let it define me.

Instead, I focused on improving myself. I honed my skills, gained valuable experience, and remained persistent. Three years later, when Landstar had another internal audit position open, I applied again. This time, I was hired. The same company that once said "no" welcomed me as part of their team.

A similar story unfolded with Deutsche Bank, where I currently work. My first interaction with them was in 2019 for a trader surveillant position. Despite a promising recommendation from a friend, I decided to prioritize my plan to gain public accounting experience at CRI. Two years later, I interviewed for an internal audit role at Deutsche Bank but didn’t get the job. Yet, I didn’t give up. At the end of 2022, they reached out to me for the same position. Because of the impression I left during my previous interview, I was given another chance, and this time, I succeeded.

What Rejections Teach Us

A rejection doesn’t always mean you’re not good enough. Sometimes, it’s about timing, fit, or the company’s immediate needs. What matters most is the impression you leave:

  • Preparation: Always come to interviews ready to showcase your skills and determination. Employers remember candidates who take the process seriously.
  • Professionalism: Respond to rejection gracefully. Thank the interviewers for their time and express continued interest in the company.
  • Growth: Use rejection as motivation to improve. Reflect on feedback and identify areas where you can grow.

How to Turn a No Into a Future Yes

Here are actionable steps to ensure a rejection today doesn’t close doors for tomorrow:

  1. Leave a Positive Impression Every interaction with an employer counts. Whether it’s through your resume, interview, or follow-up email, aim to show professionalism, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Employers often revisit candidates they’ve been impressed with in the past.
  2. Follow Up and Stay Connected After a rejection, send a thank-you email expressing gratitude for the opportunity and your interest in future roles. Keep in touch with recruiters or hiring managers through platforms like LinkedIn by engaging with their content or sending occasional updates on your progress.
  3. Keep Building Your Skills Identify any skill gaps or experiences you may need to strengthen. Certifications, volunteer work, or side projects can make you a stronger candidate the next time.
  4. Reapply Strategically If a company posts a similar role in the future, don’t hesitate to apply again. Highlight what you’ve accomplished since your last application to show growth and renewed readiness.
  5. Stay Persistent Don’t let rejection deter you from pursuing your goals. The job market can be competitive, but your persistence and adaptability will set you apart.

The Bigger Picture

My experiences with Landstar and Deutsche Bank taught me that rejection is rarely the end of the road. It’s an opportunity to grow, learn, and prepare for the next chance. A no today doesn’t erase your potential or the possibility of success tomorrow.

To every professional immigrant navigating the challenges of building a career in the USA, remember: the journey isn’t always linear. Stay focused, stay resilient, and always be ready for when opportunity knocks again.
