Can you recall one most precious gift that you received in your life? For most of us it is something that we received in our childhood days. The first watch that you received from your dad, the bicycle or a Parker pen, these make up the list of most memorable gifts in life.
If I go back in the memory lane, the most memorable present is the red sari gifted by my brother. He bought the saree from his first salary.
And today when I visit my Nani (grandmother’s) house, the envelope with a few hundred rupee notes that she hands over to me or my husband delights me. Though I say, Oh Nani, we are earning enough, just keep showering blessings. But somewhere within I get a happy feeling. Every one of us, irrespective of age or status love to receive gifts.
And if we give a thought to this, the most prized-gifts are not even the expensive ones.
Why do we give gifts?
In the race to look successful, to look better than others we tend to forget the prime reason behind gifting.
Gifts are an emotion which eventually takes form of a material thing. And thus the core idea behind gifting should be to express and not just to impress.
Though at times we fall prey to our ego; we think that the person will value us more if he/she receives an expensive gift from us. There is no harm in giving an expensive gift but a gift without putting thoughts has no power to express the true feelings.
Discovering the right gifts
?It was five years back, on propose day when my boyfriend (now husband) sent me a big bouquet of 100 red flowers along with chocolates. Though it was a very cute thing to do and mostly girls like such gestures but what was my reaction? I became super angry and started shouting over the call. I agree, I was the worst recipient who reacted there and then.
My husband just didn’t understand this reaction.
It was considerably an expensive gift considering what he was earning then. But what went wrong? Well gifting and receiving flowers is highly romantic. I am not a romantic person and hence the reaction.
But if he would have thought a bit, I am a fashion lover, a workaholic, a writing enthusiast and a movie buff.
Probably a personalized stationery gift, a little black dress or an experiential gift like a spa voucher would have delighted me big time.
(Dear Husband, I am going to send you this article’s link.. you have a chance to correct the past mistake one more time.. :p)
Final Words
I myself used to be a very bad gift giver. I goofed up gifting a lot many times until the day I started working for gifting portal. And now I have started getting the concept of gifting which is way more thoughtful and the game of emotions than we imagine.
Well, gifting is an art. While choosing a gift, don’t generalize and think from the recipient’s perspective. In today’s world when everyone has everything, just a price tag of the gift isn’t even going to impress anyone.
Choose the right gifts, expensive or inexpensive but the most thoughtful and unique ones.
What are your thoughts? How do you choose gifts? What kind of gifts do you like to receive. Please do share in comments. :)
