My client Nicola* knew exactly what kind of style she wanted as a leader in business, and could reel off a list of celebrities whose look she admired…. BUT.?
When it came to getting dressed every day - even though she had some brilliant pieces in her wardrobe - she kept going back to the same grey T-shirt.?
Nicola isn’t alone. I see this all the time. We know what we WANT to wear… but we can’t seem to stop pulling on that same old 'meh' item.
And over time, the result is that it makes us FEEL ‘meh.’
Sometimes, items of clothes act as the physical manifestation of a comfort zone.?
In Nicola’s case, as we dug deeper into her thoughts around getting dressed, it became clear that the REASON she kept choosing the grey T-shirt over the beautiful green shirt she REALLY wanted to wear, was because of an old story from childhood that colour would equal attention, and attention equals show off.?
It was time to throw out that story, and with it, the old T-shirt.?
What old T-shirt - and what story- are you ready to let go of?

I know that getting rid of clothes can feel like admitting defeat.?
The pair of trousers that don’t fit that you keep telling yourself will fit one day…
That shirt that’s not quite the right colour for you and makes you look a bit ‘off’...
That ‘classic’ jacket you think you SHOULD have in your wardrobe because, well, it’s a classic… even though it makes you feel bored to tears and you never actually wear it...
That dress you bought because it was the THING of the season and well, if the fashion editors say it’s the THING, then it’s the thing. Because you can’t trust yourself when it comes to this stuff right?
When we confront these items, we aren’t just looking at material. We’re looking inwards at the money we’ve ‘wasted’, the time we’ve ‘wasted’ and the guilt we feel about all of it.
But it’s better to confront it and move on now, than it is to hold onto this stuff and be held back by it for the next year, trust me.

2 年I always used to save my ‘best clothes’ for special occasions but am much better at just enjoying them now. I also learned two important tricks when I started out in the corporate world (1) dress for the job you want to be promoted to (2) as a female, don’t spend time and money on multiple outfits if you don’t want to: I would buy the best suits I could afford with a skirt and trouser option and then just mix up the shirts and accessories.
