Why Teaching Digital Skills Still Matters in the Age of AI

Recently, while listening to a podcast about AI-powered coding tools, it dawned on me! By the time students who learn through Code4Kids graduate, AI advancements could render core coding skills unrecognisable or even redundant!

I myself, am not a developer, but I have built some very basic Apps using AI. I learned a great deal about coding throughout this process -? without writing a single line of code. It was eye-opening and made me question the future of coding education.

And I am not alone. I know several developers and tech professionals who have genuine concerns about job security and being made redundant by AI. They're unsure how their roles will evolve in this new landscape.

Is Teaching Coding and Digital Skills Still Relevant?

This brings about a very valid question, “Is teaching coding and digital skills still necessary when AI can handle so much?”? While we can't predict the future with absolute certainty, I believe it's safer - and smarter - to continue equipping students with a broad range of digital skills, including coding.?

Here's why:

  • Having Agency in a Tech-Driven World: Even if AI handles the heavy lifting, understanding the basics gives students control over the technology they use.
  • Developing Critical Thinking: Learning digital skills fosters problem-solving abilities that are valuable in any field.
  • Staying Adaptable: Technology changes fast. A solid foundation helps students adjust to new tools and platforms.
  • Navigating Ethical Challenges: Understanding technology helps students recognize and address concerns like privacy and bias.
  • Collaborating with AI: Knowing how things work allows students to use AI tools effectively, not just passively accept what they produce.

A Secure Step Toward the Future

Therefore, the risk of excluding these skills is leaving students unprepared for future challenges. By investing in their digital education now, we're helping them stay equipped for an uncertain future. I would say it's certainly a safer bet than doing nothing - the potential benefits far outweigh the risks.
