Why Taking Control of Your Health Should Be Your Top Priority in 2023

It has become clear that poor health is a major risk factor for serious illness and death.?

However, the reality is that poor health has been a growing problem for many years, long before the pandemic. In fact, poor health has become so common that it is often seen as the norm.

As a heart surgeon with over 3,000 surgeries under my belt, I have seen firsthand the devastating effects of poor health. But I also know that it doesn't have to be this way. Every one of us has the power to take control of our health and prevent chronic illnesses.

The first step is to realize that the traditional messaging around healthy food has been misguided. The food pyramid that we all grew up with is not only outdated, but it's also flipped upside down. Instead of focusing on whole grains and low-fat diets, we should emphasize the importance of protein and healthy fats.

Processed foods and vegetable oils should be avoided, while protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, and eggs should be a staple in our diets. Building and maintaining muscle through resistance exercise is also crucial for good health.

The truth is, we are bombarded with unhealthy food options every day. But with a little education and effort, we can make simple changes that will profoundly impact our health.

In addition to diet and exercise, good sleep is also essential for good health. Studies have shown that six hours of high-quality sleep is better than eight hours of poor-quality sleep. Gut health is also important, and we should focus on getting back to the natural ways our bodies were meant to function.

Measuring insulin levels can also provide important insights into our health. Checking insulin levels and making simple lifestyle changes like parking further away or walking an extra block can make a big difference.

At the end of the day, the most important thing we can do for our health is to take control of our own lives. We should focus on making simple lifestyle changes, like avoiding processed foods, increasing protein intake, and building muscle through resistance exercise. With the right tools and knowledge, we can achieve good health and prevent chronic illnesses.

As we enter a new year, let's make taking control of our health our top priority.

The pandemic has taught us the importance of good health, and now is the time to make changes that will benefit us for years to come.
