The Power of the Mute Button

Why Taking Charge of Your Attention is More Important than Ever

The other week when I was at the gas pump, I noticed a small “MUTE” button next to the screen that was blaring at me about energy drinks. I didn’t know you could silence those things!!

Usually, I’d start the gas pump then quick jump in the car and shut the door to avoid the obnoxiously loud commercials, waiting it out until the gas tank was full.

Now I know there’s another option. It’s a small but exciting thrill in my life!

Do you ever feel bombarded by sounds, sights, or smells? If so, you’re likely among those who are highly sensitive – which can be both a blessing and a curse.

And it got me to thinking…

Are there things (or maybe people) who you’re allowing to take up more than their fair share of your attention?

What in your world have you been tolerating, avoiding, or “making do” with? There seems to be extra pressure to just get through to the other end of things and survive rather than thrive.

I’ve caught myself in these old patterns and invite you to do a little self-reflection on?what you can MUTE in your life.

Is there EXTERNAL stimulation such as the news or endless internet scrolling that you could mute?

Are there INTERNAL messages such as fears of offending others or repetitive worries that are ready for the mute button?

When we tend to our inner and outer environment like this, it creates more space for our fuller expression, joy, and freedom.

Pausing or muting the news doesn’t mean you don’t care. What it does is it tends to your inner landscape so that your capacity for compassion doesn’t get overloaded.

I wish for you a more peaceful, inner space, and that your external environment, too, responds and reflects the care you’re cultivating for yourself. I strongly believe this has powerful ripple effects into our world. Your ability to tune into your inner knowing is an overlooked pathway for growing peace in our world.
