Why Surplus Steel Should Be A Part of Your Business

For many fabrication and manufacturing companies, large jobs will require prime material in new condition with mtrs. Because of certain regulations it is essential to be able to trace back the test reports to the steel and the condition must be in pristine condition to pass inspection. That being said, even companies that have to have brand new material for 80-90% of the time will occasionally come across a job or customer that will not need material in new condition for whatever reason. We recently worked with a company that was able to use some 2” surplus steel with a rusty condition because their customer was going to be machining the plate down about 1/8” of an inch on both ends of the plate. Because of the this the surface condition was not very critical. We did happen to have the test reports on the material which was required. What most people don’t realize is we do get test reports on many surplus steel items! At the end of the day this customer was able to acquire some plate at a below market cost (especially with plate being a commodity that is highly priced in today’s market). We were able to turn around and deliver the steel in a timely manner which helped our customer lock in their job.
