Why Stress Is So Harmful
We all know that stress is part of life, but did you know it can actually take a serious toll on our health? When we’re stressed, our bodies go into overdrive, and over time, this can affect everything from our energy to our mood and even our immune system
.
The good news? Once we know the effects of stress, we can start making small changes that’ll help us manage it, feel better, and take back control of our health.
Here are some of the ways stress impacts our bodies—and a few simple, effective ways to help reduce it.
1. Stress Weakens Our Immune System
Do you get sick EVERY year around the holidays? And do you also feel stressed out EVERY year during the holidays?
Chronic stress releases cortisol, which, over time, weakens our immune system.?
This makes us more susceptible to colds, infections, and all those seasonal bugs we’d rather avoid! Take a few minutes each day for deep breathing, quiet reflection, or even a quick walk outside.
This can do wonders for calming the mind and strengthening our defenses.
2. It Messes with Our Sleep and Energy
Stress often leads to tossing and turning at night, which leaves us feeling drained and cranky during the day.
Try creating a simple nighttime routine to help your body and mind wind down—put electronics away one hour before bed, have a warm cup of herbal tea, a quick stretch, or even reading something uplifting can help ease your mind and improve your sleep.
3. It Impacts Our Digestion
Did you know stress can disrupt our gut? That “butterflies” feeling isn’t just in your head! When we’re stressed, digestion slows down, which can lead to bloating, discomfort, and irregularity.?
One trick? Practice mindful eating by slowing down and savoring each bite. This lets your body digest properly and helps you enjoy your meals without distraction.
4. Stress Drains Our Joy and Focus
When we’re constantly stressed, it’s harder to concentrate, feel positive, or enjoy the little things.
Taking short breaks throughout the day to breathe, stretch, or even talkwith a friend can help reset your focus and bring a little joy back to your routine.
5. It Can Lead to Serious Health Issues Over Time
High levels of stress over time are linked to high blood pressure, heart problems, and other health conditions. It’s a powerful reminder to prioritize our well-being now.
Find ways to add moments of calm into each day—a short walk, a quick journal entry, or even just a few minutes of quiet reflection. These little moments add up to big changes in our health.
Stress is a part of life, but it doesn’t have to run our lives. When we’re mindful of it and take small steps to reduce it, we can protect our health, increase our joy, and feel better day by day.
Down with stress up with joy,
-Joe
