Why startups go bust in 2 years.

Why startups go bust in 2 years.

You can only sprint that far ??

The AI Dilemma: When Do Humans Step In?

"The tricky part with all these AI tools," Michael told me, "is figuring out the perfect point where humans should step in and make a decision. And so it’s becoming more relevant than ever to have people who can make great decisions"

(Otherwise, good luck delegating, creating business that works without you)

Exactly!

In a data-rich world of complexity people need to make great decisions. And great decisions? They don’t just happen by chance. They happen when our ??brains are in the right state.

“2012 study found that participants who were subjected to the stress of preparing for a medical selection exam tended to make decisions out of habit, whereas participants who were not under the same stress were able to make new decisions, adapting them to the situation at hand and the perceived consequences.”

~ How stress impacts decision-making.

Here’s the catch: most people don’t realize their brains aren’t always in decision-making mode, and that comes down to one simple truth—recovery.

Why Recovery MUST be A Part of Performance Culture ??

No recovery, no consistent performance. Period.

When you or your team aren’t practicing solid, science-backed recovery, forget about hitting those high-performance goals. Learning, creativity, changing your mind when presented with new information—none of that is possible without taking care of your physical and mental recovery. #growthmindset

Think of it like a car engine.

You can only rev it up so many times before it overheats. Keep pushing without a break, and eventually, the wheels just stop turning. ????

Why most startups go BUST???????

“Sprint fuel” is gone as fast as pre-seed-stage investment and nothing has been put into long-term fuel tank to last long enough to succeed.

You’ve run out of steam buddy!

Sprint, but Don’t Forget that Sprints Don’t Last

There’s this mindset out there that the harder you push, the more successful you’ll be. Sure, you can sprint for a bit. But if that’s all you do, you’ll bunk like a sprinting marathoner.

Barely leaving a mark on your long-term goals or the better world you imagined once… ??

The 2 Big Gaps Holding Us Back

Here’s what I see as the two main gaps in how most people think (though if you're reading this, you might be part of the minority that actually gets it):

  1. Not realizing that the chronically under-recovered you are only a fraction of your full potential - welcome overhiring mediocrity.
  2. Thinking recovery is just sleep. Spoiler: it’s not just about how many hours you clock in bed. ??

What Recovery Really Looks Like

Let’s break it down. Recovery isn’t just sleep. It’s also:

  • What you eat (you are what you eat, your brain is build of it! Would you race formula one in a car made from junk-yard details?)
  • The thoughts you cultivate (optimism isn’t just cute; it’s powerful for stress management)
  • The mindset (growth mindset isn’t a hype - it’s one of the best resilience practices)
  • Your relationships (hello, support network ??)
  • Your environment (are you feeling safe and inspired, supported? or like a lion’s chasing you every day… now?)
  • What you consume (if you’re doomscrolling the news, it’s time for a detox ??).

????By the way, fun fact: when you’re stressed, your cells use more energy??????. It’s like carrying around a leaky bucket. No matter how much water you pour in, it’ll run out fast! ??

Recovery: It’s a Success Skillset, Not “I know this I’m good”

Every single aspect of recovery is a set of daily skills and practices to cultivate over time - it’s a set of habits you build, it's a culture you design for.

You don’t build Rome in a day, and you don’t build genius overnight either.

Why would your change be any different?

What's Next?

In upcoming newsletters [SUBSCRIBE], I’ll be sharing simple, research-backed practices to help you develop each of these areas, research-based and real-life tested.

You can use them to coach yourself, your team, or your whole community toward higher performance and a more positive world. ??
