Why Starting With Transitions is the Best Way to Grow Communities

CEO & Co-Founder Mighty Networks, a community platform. Past: A16Z, Ning. Passionate believer in people magic. Technologist. Entrepreneur. Human.
For years, the advice has been the same: "Pick a niche."
And for years, I’ve watched incredibly smart, motivated community builders get stuck right there.
Why? Because niching down sounds easy, but it’s actually the hardest way to start.
Here’s the truth: Nobody knows what a niche actually is.
They don’t know when they have one. They don’t know when they don’t. And they definitely don’t know if they’ve picked the right one.
And that’s why I say: Forget the niche. Find the transition.
The Power of Transitions
A transition is the moment when someone moves from Point A to Point B.
?? Graduating college and landing that first job
?? Starting a business
?? Moving to a new city
?? Becoming a parent
?? Launching a community
Transitions are when people are most motivated. They’re ready to take action. They’re looking for support. They’re hungry for connection.
And when you create a space that helps them move through a transition? You win.
Why This Works
A niche puts people in a box. A transition? It creates momentum.
?? People in transition see themselves in what you offer.
?? They know exactly why they should join.
?? And they’re more likely to invite others who are in the same stage.
Once someone moves through the first transition? Great. There’s always another one.
That’s how you build a thriving, growing, evolving community.
So, What’s Next?
Stop looking for a niche and start looking for a transition.
Get specific about where someone is starting—and where they want to go.
Create a space that helps them get there.
Do this, and you’ll never worry about “niching down” again.

3 天前Too many people get caught up in the idea of picking the "perfect" niche and end up stuck in analysis paralysis. Focusing on the transition, where your audience is coming from and where they want to go, gives you a much clearer path to creating value, Gina Bianchini. ???

5 天前Great point. The transition start point is the entry point to my community. People want to feel they are not alone and working through a transition with other people bonds people in a unique way. That bond then continues as people emerge out the other side of their transition and want a place to stay connected and continue the journey together. From there, community evolves and deepens into something more solid and sustainable.
