Why Starting and Finishing Are the Least Important Parts

Why Starting and Finishing Are the Least Important Parts

The middle is our least favorite part.

It isn’t a part of the process that’s super shiny or something new to post on social media and it usually feels a little stale and boring to our dopamine-driven brains.

We want excitement!?

We want energy!?

We want finish lines and applause!?

We want ribbon cuttings and results!?

We want to get there already!

Who has time for process or patience when it comes to losing weight, a long project at work or making the case for a transfer into a different department within your company.

But we all know the middle isn’t just part of the journey, but arguably the biggest part. So, the key is to plan for a sustainable middle so you can finish what you started no matter the goal.

Here are 4 key steps you can start taking today:

  1. Set up rituals. If you start a project with a daily update gathering, make sure those continue. Set up strong structures when your motivation is high so when it inevitably lags (in the middle), they keep you and your team going.
  2. Hire a coach for the whole journey of a goal or season. It’s easy to hire a mentor, physical trainer or coach at the beginning and to show up when the notebooks are fresh and new. Anyone can do that, but when your motivation starts to wane after the exciting kick-off, have the built-in and steady support to help you confront the longer, steady challenges in the middle.?
  3. Celebrate small wins.?When running a marathon, it’s best to focus on 5 miles at a time. By creating smaller benchmarks, you can break it down into manageable sections and then celebrate each one to keep you moving. The same rule applies in your work. Divide a 3 or 6 month timeline into a series of sprints and only focus on your deliverables for the project for the week. And then celebrate!? This will help keep your energy and momentum going.
  4. Take breaks!?“I’ll rest when it’s done” is a perfect recipe for burnout. It fails every time because the work is never done (sorry to break it to you). You have to stop for gas! Quick short breaks will fuel you for the long haul.

Being in the muck and mud of the middle is a given in life, so the smartest thing to do isn’t to always be starting things or shortcutting your way to finishing them, but mastering the middle.
