Why Spot Checks and growing fines are so important for your business

Whilst there are many employers successfully complying with automatic enrolment regulation there are a decent number, particularly in certain sectors who aren’t complying with the new rules.
The pension regulator recently highlighted that hospitality and retail are sectors they’re especially focused on and are doing ‘spot checks’ in cities across the UK to confirm whether specific businesses are complying.
In recent times the pensions regulator has visited Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham and London to check whether employers are doing what they said they did and to confirm that employers are meeting all of their obligations.
Now I’m pretty sure the focus of the pension’s regulator is focused on the companies it believes are not complying properly. This might come from information they’ve received, research they’ve done or an disgruntled employee or ex-employee who may have blown the whistle on a employer for not meeting their obligations.
Now the implications for employers can be pretty severe if they continuously choose to ignore their obligations or don’t comply correctly.
On this page there are a number of business which have not only been ‘named and shamed’ as non compliers but also fines on some occasion have increased to £50,000+
So, with spot checks in towns and cities up and down the UK and a growing number of companies with fines in the tens of thousands and a damaged reputation the message is clearer than ever.
Not complying or trying to ‘short cut’ automatic enrolment compliance might be the most expensive mistake your business ever makes.
