Why Space is Superb Choice for Startups!

Why Space is Superb Choice for Startups!

The JetBrains Space tool?(check out:?jetbrains.space)?was released last year & over 30,000 organizations have joined Space! What is Space? It is an "An all-in-one solution for software teams" to build and deliver, chat and collaborate, manage teams, manage projects, and automate workflows.

Though Space is meant for any creative teams?(mainly software development teams),?in organisations large and small,?we find that Space is especially attractive to startups.?This article is on why you should just jump right and start using it NOW if yours is a startup!

Founders playing mixed roles

In a startup,?there are no separate teams?(people,?often yes)?for sales,? marketing,? admin,? finance,?HR,?etc.? Typically it is all in one role that founder(s)?play.

With that,?using different tools for different purposes becomes difficult.?One tool for maintaining documents and their accesses?(e.g,?offer/experience letters),?another tool for keeping track of to-do lists and check-lists,?one more tool for scheduling meetings,?yet another tool for chats and so on.

Space is an?"integrated team environment"?-?provides a unified set of tools?-?for maintaining?&?sharing your documents,?to-do-lists,?check-lists,?team structure,?chats,?and more.?

So even if yours is not a?"tech"?startup,?you can use Space.?For example,?if yours is a digital marketing company or a media startup,?you can use Space that covers needs we mentioned above!

Dealing with numerous tools

Software development teams use various tool for different purposes in the software development lifecycle.?Interestingly,?Space covers most of tools that are needed for software development as a single tool.?You can plan your development as sprints with issue boards,?file and fix issues,?create and maintain code repositories,?do code reviews,?run automated tests,?perform CI/CD,?and more.

The best part about using a single tool instead of numerous tools is that you don't have to?"connect them".?For example,?if you make a code review comment,?it also appears as a chat in Space,?so the concerned developers can take a look at it.?You can even connect from IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA to Space using the Space plugin and push the changes to the repo.

There are no dedicated IT teams or administrators in a startup.?Startups cannot afford to purchase licenses of many different tools.?Remembering numerous usernames and passwords and logging-in every now and then for each of the tools is painful.?Having a single tool for software development simplifies most,?if not all,?of these problems.

If you are Lord of the Rings fan,?then you will certainly relate to this for Space:?One tool to rule them all!?:-)

Cost concerns

Almost all startups have significant cost concerns.?For example,?if yours is a product based startup,?getting sufficient funding or maintaining cashflow is likely to be a big challenge.?That’s one of the reasons startups often choose free and open-source tools.?However,?that needn’t be a problem with using Space.?

You get 2,000 CI credits per month,?10 GB space,?50 GB data transfer per month,?and more in the free plan.?These are more than sufficient to meet the needs of small startups!

Once your startup grows,?you can perhaps consider Team which is at a nominal?$8 per user per month.?So,?till your startup grows to a significant size,?you can use Space practically free of cost.?That's attractive,?isn't it?

Positives of being a startup

Often,?being a startup gives an opportunity to start from scratch for adopting a tool.?For example,?there are overheads in adopting new technologies and tools in corporates such as the need to get compliances cleared for using tools,?getting permissions for install them etc.?

However there are rarely such problems in startups. If you are a founder, you can ask your team to try using it straightaway. If you are working for a startup, you can just get buy-in from your founder to try it out. You can use the cloud-based Space,?and if needed install the apps in your mobile and desktop?–?so you can always access it without worries about getting permissions to install and use the tools?(that you would typically need in corporates).

Our CodeOps example

As a startup ourselves?(CodeOps),?we found that Space suits perfect for our needs.?Just to give an example,?we completely replaced Slack for chatting?/?team discussions.?In fact,?I wrote this blog post in Space and shared it for collaborative editing for inputs from our team.?This replaced the need to use Google Docs for this purpose?-?and the pain of giving permission to each and every person when using Google Docs is gone since I could just provide edit access to my?"team"?and be done with it!
