Everyone on this earth especially people like us who are always busy socializing in corporates hardly can deny the importance of managing a team. A team that comprise of people with different attitudes, principles, thoughts, ideologies etc. Successfully connecting different mindset of people should necessarily not an easy task.
But practically if we see, every team want to succeed. Let’s take a simple example of Team Work in a game of Cricket. Unless a fielder properly throws the ball to the wicket-keeper and wicket-keeper throws the ball to the other fielder standing at the non-striker end, who can hit the stumps to make the batsman out falling short of some yard, the team cannot win. Hence for any team to succeed – every team member should COUNT on each other, which is one of the main secrets for a team to succeed.
So, what qualities every team member should embrace to COUNT on each other?
Character: Character makes trust possible and trust makes leadership possible. Robert A Cook – an author and pastor once said “There is no substitute for character. You can buy brains but you can’t buy character”. So, first step in countability is to have solid trust, without which no communication is practically possible.
Competence: In a game of cricket, think about a situation where the bowler is very trustworthy but is not efficient enough to do the skilful delivery. Can we depend on this bowler to win the game? So, character and competence should go hand in hand.
Commitment: This reminds me of a cricketing event back in 2002, when Anil Kumble played with his broken jaw, bowled 14 overs on the final day of Antigua Test and also took the wicket of Brian Lara, the match ended with a draw. Can’t we depend or COUNT on the team members who shows this level of dedication and commitment?
Consistency: We have a person in our team delivering every project without any logical contradictions, fair accurately over and over of time. I also find clients also feel very relax when the projects are delivered by this team member. All of us easily COUNT on him any time.
Cohesiveness: A sense of pride in ability of a team to reach at highest level than possible for an individual. This reminds me of the final hockey match in the movie “Chak De! India”, where every team member took the pride of being as a one team to succeed.
