Walt Disney Feature
AJ Eckstein (the founder of The Final Round) was?recently featured ?by the Walt Disney Alumni Association to discuss his experience in the “Business Leader Rotation Program.” The program allowed AJ to explore the behind-the-scenes of Disney’s operations, working in areas including finance, marketing strategy, revenue management, and more.
Working just minutes from Disneyland, meeting other students from across the world, and participating in events and sports (such as canoeing) are just some reasons why this experience was so enjoyable.
Why it Matters
Similar to the LinkedIn event, AJ was not familiar or comfortable with every task he was involved with. However, stepping out of your comfort zone is how you learn. And if you’re not learning, you’re stagnant.

Business Buzz
Too Close for Comfort?
A recent?study? of over?20 million LinkedIn users?found that?your best friends might not be your best bet when it comes to finding a job.?In fact, your?acquaintances?(or as LinkedIn words it, your second or third connections) may be?more beneficial.
The study, conducted by?researchers?at?Harvard, MIT, and Stanford, utilized A/B testing to make this discovery. Users in two different experimental groups were shown slightly different contact recommendations; this caused one group to form stronger connections (closer friends), and the other group to form weaker connections (acquaintances). Job application and job transmission rates (working at the same firm as a connection) were documented.
Discovery:?The authors found that those who shared 10 mutual connections were twice as likely to land a new job compared to those with whom 20 or more mutual connections were shared.
Although many were skeptical of the ethicality of the study, LinkedIn has stated the results will be used primarily to enhance the user experience within the site. However, the results are very important in a broader, more practical sense.
Takeaway:?Those closest to you may not as be as valuable as you think when it comes to landing that new role. Branching out to new people, such as friends of friends, might be a more valuable use of your time.

Why Some Recruiters?Ghost????You (and How to Prevent it)
Getting?ghosted? by a recruiter is the worst - all that time and energy spent just to be ignored. And whether it’s on purpose or out of the hands of the recruiter, there are many ways to maximize your chances of recruiting success: through?networking. But?how? And through?what?
Why Recruiters May Ghost You
How to Prevent Getting Ghosted
LinkedIn?is one of your best friends when it comes to recruiting. Keeping an updated, active profile is the key to getting noticed by alumni and recruiters. Alumni of your school are eager to help you, so introducing yourself via LinkedIn is a great way to begin the process. Always start by asking questions out of curiosity, or questions intended to help you gain a better understanding of what they do. As you build your relationship, then you begin asking about the recruiting process, and eventually, a potential referral.

Career Fairs
Career fairs are a great opportunity to gain face time with employers on your campus. Companies have spent money in order to meet students like you, and there shouldn’t be a reason not to take full advantage. Research the firms prior to the fair (as well as the recruiters/employees who will be in attendance), and be sure to bring plenty of copies of your resume. That way, it will be easier to keep in touch with the people you met with. Be personable, be curious, but most importantly, be memorable.
Company Webinars
Company webinars are an amazing opportunity to learn more about firm-specific details, from culture to the different industries practiced within it. They often involve many employees of different roles, skill sets, and experience, providing a better understanding of what it’s like at different stages within the company. Webinars are also a great opportunity to use as an introductory point when reaching out to employers: for example, when you reach out to a recruiter following a webinar, you can say “I really enjoyed learning about your firm at “Event Name” the other day.”
Career Development Offices
Colleges and Universities devote substantial amounts of money to career development in order to make it easier for students to find their interests, meet alumni, and grow their professional careers—and it’s your tuition that pays for it. Be sure to take advantage of one-on-one sessions, meetings with alumni, and other events hosted by campus career development offices. There are often many events going on year-round (particularly during recruiting season), providing you with a great opportunity to land your dream job.

Don’t Be?Frightened?by Other Success Stories
We all know that feeling when you see the?“I’m happy to announce”?posts on LinkedIn where people share their success stories. And you are sitting there trying to figure out why you keep getting?rejection after rejection. Does this sound familiar?
LinkedIn?can be a very fun, creative, and engaging place. However, it can also bring some?negative feelings?as well (especially around recruiting season). You may see a lot of your classmates and friends posting about the events they attended, the opportunities they had, or offers they just accepted. It’s important to not let these posts?discourage you.
What’s most important is to focus on?yourself?and your?own?career journey. What steps are you taking to grow your?network? What events are you attending to gain?face time?with employers and recruiters? What actions have you taken to?prepare?for interviews?
So when it comes to other LinkedIn posts, be?happy?for others. But know that with enough hard work, the time for you to post that offer acceptance?will come. And remember that?success leaves breadcrumbs, so?don’t be scared?to reach out to the person who shared their success story and ask them for advice.
