Why some copywriters "make it"?

Why some copywriters "make it"

We've all seen it—

Some copywriting careers take off with the power of a fully-charged Tesla, and others stay trapped competing with ChatGPT for low-paying content gigs.

The question a savvy copy pro like you is trying to figure out is?whyyyyyyy?

Today, you'll watch as I attempt to answer this Olympic-sized conundrum!

Here's my take...

It's not that they necessarily have big teams behind them (???? from a team of 1 over here) or even 10+ years' experience or even a natural talent for slinging words that sell.

Instead, it all comes down to the 2 Cs

1?? Competence

A few weeks ago I saw a copywriter in a FB group asking for how to keep running their business without ever up-skilling.

There were lots of generous answers, but here's the harsh truth.

You can't.

YouTube and Google will only take you so far.

When you have an overflowing tool kit of skills, you can select the right one to?do the job fast and well.

You probably don't know this about me but one of my proudest moments was being awarded Junior Swim champion.

Did I care I had to thrash my way to the end of the pool to beat the pretty average competition?

Nope, I didn't realise you could half your expenditure and double your efficiency until I was trained by a pro in high school.

That half an hour training session literally 4x my results.

If you can get clients' results quickly and easily, you've got all the potential to build a 6-figure business (or whatever success looks like for you!)?even if you started recently.

Sure, most of us don't want to part with our hard-earned cash.

I know, I sure don't.

But I also know every single time I've invested in my copy skills it's been returned to me several times over.

To me, it's non-negotiable.

And so is building your...

2?? Confidence

I’d bet my much-loved ugg boots?(or "disgusting cess pits" as my husband lovingly calls them)?that there are thousands of highly competent copywriters out there still earning peanuts because they’re lacking confidence.

Confidence is what enables you to:

  • Pitch yourself to dream clients
  • Say?YES!?to giant copy jobs
  • Push back on feedback you don’t agree with
  • Put your hand up for masterminds and collaborations
  • Send off copy without a zillion re-reads
  • Submit 5-figure proposals

Deepening your skillset to include UX (something many copywriters don’t know much about yet) helps?you and your clients have more confidence in your abilities.

Which can lead to bigger, more exciting projects with expert-level rates.

Which leads to more confidence.

Which ...

...ok you get the picture.

Take Jessica for example who had the confidence to?double her rates?during Beyond Web Copy or Montasser who found the confidence to finally switch careers and publish his UX copywriting blog.

Whether you get my help inside Beyond Web Copy or go it alone, UX helps set you apart from the sea of copywriters out there in both competence and confidence.

That’s certainly been the case for Debs...

“I was struggling with imposter syndrome and not being able to differentiate myself from other website copywriters. I now have a distinct USP.?UX has boosted my credibility as a copywriter, which has led to my offering masterclasses and coaching.

I can write SEO copy but also have the skills to ensure websites also have a smooth user experience. Few copywriters offer that skill."

If you’re thinking, “OMG yessss!! Tell me more.”

I'd love to invite you to grab an all-access backstage pass to Unveiling UX.

I love this Susan! There’s no stopping you when you have competence and confidence. I learned it a long time ago from Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, and Jim Rohn “Never stop learning” In high school I set the record for the 100 yard dash. It will never be broken because they run the 100 meters now ??

That thing about avoiding up-skilling is interesting. I think if you're awake at work, you'll learn new things whether you want to or not :)
