Why are Some Areas Hot and Others Cold?

There are many potential reasons as to why some areas in a building may be too warm while others are cooler or even frosty. Each case needs to be evaluated individually.

The most common reason might be that one or more heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) units are non-functional.? However, this is not the only possibility and there are some broader categories of common reasons these complaints are made. Other potential reasons include:

  • Control problems - Meaning a non-functional control system, setpoint and schedule issues, or sensor placement or calibration issues.
  • Air distribution problems - Meaning restricted or excessive supply airflow into some parts of the space, insufficient return air access, or duct leakage.
  • Building use issues - Meaning one area may have open doors to the outside vs another area with high internal heat gains from equipment or people.
  • Design issues - Meaning inappropriate or missing equipment or ductwork, or unanticipated changes to the area’s use.
  • Personnel issues - Meaning disagreement with the corporate setpoint or disagreement among occupants of the space as to what is comfortable.

Determining the root problem is an important step towards resolving the problem. It is not uncommon to have more than one problem simultaneously. A skilled and experienced HVAC service technician will follow a process to detect and diagnose the range of potential issues.
