Why Some ALT Applications Get Rejected—And How to Improve Your Chances (For Applicants in Japan)
If you're already in Japan and applying to be an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), you might think the process will be easier—but not every application is successful. Here are some common reasons why domestic applicants get rejected and how to improve your chances. Based on my experience as a recruiter working with Interac
?? 1. Incomplete or Unclear Applications
A poorly structured resume, missing details, or an unclear work history can hurt your chances. Make sure your application is complete, well-organized, and highlights relevant experience. If your recruiter has to chase you down for details you’re already starting off on the wrong foot.??
?? 2. No Teaching or Child-Related Experience
Strictly speaking teaching experience is not typically require, but is is a plus and can push an application forward in a competitive labor market.? If you’ve worked with children, tutored, or had any experience in education or education adjacent fields, highlight those skills. Even customer service or coaching roles can provide transferable skills like communication and team work.
?? 3. Visa or Sponsorship Issues
If you’re already in Japan, your visa status matters. Some common issues include:
?? For Filipino applicants: Depending on your visa type, you may also need an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) from MWO (Migrant Workers Office) without an OEC you may be redirected to apply from overseas.???
?? 4. Poor Interview Performance
Being in Japan doesn’t guarantee an easy interview. You still need to show professionalism, enthusiasm, and a strong ability to engage with students. Be ready to discuss classroom situations and show that you’re adaptable, reliable, and excited about the job. Simply being an English speaker with a good visa is not enough.?
?? 5. Inflexibility with Placement Locations
Depending on the time of year ALT positions might be outside major cities. If you’re unwilling or unable to relocate or commute, options may be limited. Being open to different locations can significantly improve your chances of being offered a position.? Combine that flexibility with the ability to drive and your chances increase greatly.
?? 6. Short Job History or Frequent Job Changes
Recruiters prefer candidates who show stability and committed. If you have multiple short-term jobs on your resume, be prepared to explain why and show that you’re serious about staying in an ALT role at least until the end of the initial contract period.
? How to Improve Your Chances
?? Submit a clear, complete, and well-structured application. ?? Highlight any experience working with children or in education. ?? Ensure your visa is valid and eligible for ALT work (check OEC requirements if applicable). ?? Prepare for your interview—show confidence, professionalism, and enthusiasm! ?? Think about how open you might be to different locations and flexible you can be with placements.
